Thinking About Trying Hypnotherapy? Here Is What Actually Happens
If you have been considering hypnotherapy but feel uncertain about what the experience involves, you are not alone. It is one of the most common questions I hear, and it is a perfectly reasonable one. After all, most of us have only ever seen hypnosis on television or at stage shows, and that version of hypnosis has very little to do with what happens in a clinical hypnotherapy session.
I have been practising hypnotherapy in Wilmslow since 1994, and in that time I have guided thousands of people through their very first session. I understand the mixture of curiosity, hope and nervousness that most people feel before they walk through my door. So let me take you through exactly what happens — step by step — so that you know precisely what to expect.
Before Your Session: The Initial Phone Chat
Your journey actually begins before you arrive at my practice. When you first get in touch — whether by phone or through my contact page — we will have an informal conversation about what you are hoping to achieve.
This is not a formal assessment. It is simply a chance for us to connect, for you to ask any questions you might have, and for me to get a general sense of what is going on for you. I will explain how I work, what is involved, and give you an honest view of whether hypnotherapy is likely to help with your particular situation.
There is absolutely no pressure during this conversation. Some people book a session straight away, others take time to think it over, and both approaches are perfectly fine. My only concern is that you feel comfortable and well-informed.
Do You Need to Prepare Anything?
No preparation is needed at all. You do not need to do anything special before your session. Just come as you are. There is no need to wear particular clothing, avoid certain foods, or do any kind of mental preparation. The only thing I would suggest is that you allow yourself enough time so that you are not rushing — arriving in a relaxed state of mind is always helpful, though certainly not essential.
Your First Consultation: What Happens in the Room
Your initial consultation lasts approximately 80–90 minutes. This is longer than follow-up sessions because we have important groundwork to cover. Here is what happens during that time.
History-Taking and Understanding Your Story
We begin by sitting down together and talking. I will ask you about what has brought you to hypnotherapy — whether that is anxiety, a phobia, a habit like smoking, or any other issue. I will want to understand how long you have been experiencing the problem, how it affects your daily life, and what you have already tried.
This conversation is not clinical or interrogative. It is warm, honest and confidential. I genuinely want to understand your experience because that understanding directly shapes how I approach your treatment. Every person is different, and what works brilliantly for one client may not be the right approach for another.
I will also ask about your general health, any medication you may be taking, and your goals for therapy. What does life look like for you on the other side of this problem? That vision matters because it gives us a clear direction to work towards.
Setting Goals Together
Based on our conversation, we will agree on clear, realistic goals for your treatment. I am always honest about what hypnotherapy can and cannot do. If I believe a different approach would be more suitable, I will tell you. My priority is your wellbeing, not booking sessions.
We will also discuss roughly how many sessions you are likely to need. For most issues, I find that clients achieve significant improvement within three to six sessions. For phobias and smoking cessation, it is often fewer — typically one to three sessions. I will give you my honest assessment based on your individual situation.
Building Rapport and Trust
This part happens naturally throughout our conversation, but it is worth mentioning because it is genuinely important. Hypnotherapy works best when there is a strong, trusting relationship between therapist and client. You need to feel safe, heard and comfortable with me before we begin any therapeutic work.
I have been told many times by clients that they felt at ease within the first few minutes of meeting me. I think this comes from decades of experience and a genuine love for the work I do. But if for any reason you do not feel comfortable, that is absolutely fine — and I would rather you told me so we can address it than push ahead regardless.
Your First Experience of Hypnosis
Once we have covered the background and you feel ready, we move into the hypnotherapy itself. I will guide you into a state of deep relaxation using gentle, calm language. There is no swinging watch, no clicking fingers, and absolutely no loss of control.
Here is what most people experience during hypnosis:
- Deep physical relaxation. Your body feels heavy, warm and completely at ease. Some people describe it as similar to that wonderful feeling just before you drift off to sleep.
- Mental calmness. The constant chatter of your conscious mind quietens. You are still aware of everything around you, but it all feels pleasantly distant and unimportant.
- Heightened focus. Despite feeling deeply relaxed, your mind is actually more focused and receptive than usual. This is what allows us to do the therapeutic work.
- Full awareness and control. This is important: you are not asleep, you are not unconscious, and you are not under my control. You can hear everything I say, you know where you are, and you could open your eyes and sit up at any point if you chose to. Most people simply do not want to because the state feels so pleasant.
During this relaxed state, I will use carefully chosen therapeutic suggestions and techniques tailored to your specific goals. I may use visualisation, metaphor, direct suggestion, or a combination of approaches depending on what I believe will be most effective for you.
The whole experience is gentle, calming and — most people tell me — genuinely enjoyable.
What Does Hypnosis Actually Feel Like?
This is probably the question I am asked most often, and the honest answer is that it varies from person to person. However, there are some common experiences that most people share.
Hypnosis is not sleep. You do not lose consciousness, and you will remember everything that happens during the session. Most people describe it as a state of profound relaxation combined with a pleasant sense of mental clarity. You may feel as though time has passed more quickly than you expected — a forty-minute hypnosis session can feel like it lasted fifteen minutes.
Some people experience a floating sensation, others feel a pleasant heaviness in their limbs. Some notice tingling in their hands or feet. Others simply feel deeply calm and peaceful. There is no right or wrong way to experience hypnosis, and I will reassure you about this during your session.
What I can tell you with certainty, after over thirty years of practice, is that the vast majority of people find hypnosis a wonderfully relaxing and positive experience. Many clients tell me that their hypnotherapy sessions are the most relaxed they have ever felt.
My Approach: More Than Just Hypnotherapy
One of the things that sets my practice apart is that I do not rely on hypnotherapy alone. Over the years, I have trained extensively in several complementary therapeutic techniques, and I combine them to create the most effective treatment plan for each individual client.
Hypnotherapy
Clinical hypnotherapy is the foundation of my work. It allows us to access the subconscious mind — where habits, beliefs and emotional responses are stored — and make positive changes at that deeper level.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
EFT, sometimes called "tapping," combines elements of cognitive therapy with gentle tapping on specific acupressure points. It is remarkably effective for anxiety, phobias, trauma and emotional distress. I am a Certified Trainer in EFT and train other therapists in this technique.
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)
As a Master NLP Practitioner, I use NLP techniques to help clients reframe negative thought patterns and build new, positive ways of responding to challenges.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
CBT techniques help us identify and change unhelpful thinking patterns that may be contributing to your problem.
Creative Coaching
For some clients, particularly those working on confidence, motivation or personal development goals, creative coaching techniques can be a powerful addition to the therapeutic toolkit.
This multi-technique approach means that I can adapt my methods to suit you, rather than forcing you into a rigid treatment framework. It also means that if one approach is not producing results, I have alternatives to draw upon.
What Happens After Your Session
Recordings and Between-Session Tools
After your first session, I will provide you with a personalised recording to listen to at home. This recording reinforces the work we do together and helps to deepen the positive changes between sessions. I recommend listening to it daily, ideally before sleep, though any time that suits your routine is fine.
I will also begin teaching you self-help techniques — including EFT tapping and self-hypnosis — that you can use independently. These are not just tools for while you are in treatment; they are skills for life that you can continue using long after our work together has finished.
How You Might Feel Afterwards
Most people feel deeply relaxed and calm after their first session. Some feel energised and optimistic. Others feel pleasantly sleepy. All of these responses are perfectly normal.
It is also normal to notice positive changes beginning quite quickly — sometimes within hours or days of your first session. You might find that your thinking about the problem has shifted, that situations that previously triggered anxiety now feel more manageable, or that old habits feel less compelling. These early shifts are a good sign and typically become stronger with each subsequent session.
Occasionally, a client may feel emotionally stirred up after a session, particularly if we have touched on something significant. This is also a normal part of the process and usually settles within a day or two. I am always available by phone if you need reassurance between sessions.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
The number of sessions varies depending on the issue and the individual, but here is a general guide based on my experience:
- Smoking cessation: Typically one to three sessions
- Phobias: Often one to three sessions
- Anxiety, stress and emotional issues: Usually three to six sessions
- Weight management: Typically four to eight sessions
- Habits and behavioural changes: Usually three to six sessions
I will give you an honest assessment after your initial consultation, and I will never recommend more sessions than I genuinely believe you need. You can read more about session numbers in my blog post on how many hypnotherapy sessions you might need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be in control during hypnosis?
Absolutely. You are in complete control throughout every session. Hypnosis is not something that is done to you — it is something we do together, with your full cooperation and consent. You cannot be made to do anything against your will, and you can bring yourself out of the relaxed state at any time simply by opening your eyes.
Can everyone be hypnotised?
The vast majority of people can experience hypnosis. It is a natural state that we all enter regularly — for example, when you become absorbed in a book, a film or a daydream. If you can concentrate and you are willing to engage with the process, hypnosis will work for you. Intelligence and imagination actually help rather than hinder the process.
What if I cannot relax?
This is a very common concern, but it rarely turns out to be a problem. Part of my skill as a therapist is helping you relax, even if relaxation does not come easily to you. I use a variety of techniques and I adapt my approach to suit you. Many clients who told me they "could never relax" have found themselves deeply relaxed within minutes.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Clinical hypnotherapy is a well-established and safe therapeutic approach. You remain fully conscious and aware throughout, and there are no harmful side effects. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards. For more detail, read my post on whether hypnotherapy is safe.
What if it does not work for me?
Hypnotherapy is effective for a wide range of conditions, but I am always honest about the fact that no therapy works for everyone. If after your initial consultation I do not believe hypnotherapy is the right approach for you, I will tell you so. My reputation has been built over thirty years on honesty and genuine results, not on booking unnecessary sessions.
How is clinical hypnotherapy different from stage hypnosis?
Stage hypnosis is entertainment. The performers select participants who are naturally extroverted and highly suggestible, and the "hypnosis" is largely about social compliance and showmanship. Clinical hypnotherapy is a professional therapeutic process conducted in a private, confidential setting. The two have almost nothing in common apart from the word "hypnosis."
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. While many clients prefer to visit my practice in Wilmslow, I also offer sessions via video call. Online hypnotherapy is just as effective as in-person sessions and can be a convenient option if you live further away or have mobility issues.
