Understanding Your Relationship with Alcohol
The relationship between alcohol and the human mind is complex. Alcohol becomes habitual not because of a lack of willpower, but because of the way it interacts with your unconscious mind and your emotional landscape.

Habit formation. Drinking at certain times or in certain situations — after work, with meals, at social events — creates strong unconscious associations. Over time, these associations become automatic. You reach for a drink not because you have made a conscious decision to have one, but because your unconscious mind has learned to associate that situation with drinking. This is why willpower so often fails — you are fighting against deeply ingrained unconscious programming.
Emotional regulation. Many people use alcohol as a way to manage their emotions. Stress, anxiety, boredom, loneliness, sadness, and even happiness can all become triggers for drinking. When alcohol consistently provides a quick (if temporary) solution to uncomfortable feelings, your unconscious mind learns to rely on it as an emotional regulation tool. This can create a pattern where you feel unable to cope with certain emotions without a drink.
Social conditioning. Our culture normalises and even celebrates alcohol consumption. From after-work drinks to dinner parties, from birthdays to commiserations, alcohol is woven into the fabric of social life. This social conditioning makes it harder to recognise when your drinking has shifted from social to habitual, and it can make the idea of cutting back feel socially isolating.
Unconscious beliefs. Many people hold unconscious beliefs about alcohol that sustain their drinking patterns. These might include beliefs such as "I deserve a drink after a hard day," "I cannot relax without alcohol," "I am more fun when I drink," or "everyone drinks like this." These beliefs feel like truths, but they are learned patterns that can be changed.
Physical habituation. While the primary focus of our work together is on the psychological and emotional aspects of your relationship with alcohol, it is worth noting that regular drinking also creates physical habituation. Your body adjusts to the presence of alcohol, and you may find you need more to achieve the same effect. This is another reason why early intervention is so valuable — the longer the pattern continues, the more entrenched it becomes.

When you reduce your alcohol intake, the positive changes can be dramatic and far-reaching. Many of my clients are surprised by just how much better they feel once they take control of their drinking.
Physical health. Even a moderate reduction in alcohol consumption can lead to improved liver function, better sleep quality, clearer skin, reduced blood pressure, and weight loss. Your energy levels increase, your immune system strengthens, and you feel physically lighter and more vital.
Mental clarity. Alcohol affects cognitive function more than most people realise. Reducing your intake can lead to sharper thinking, better concentration, improved memory, and more creative problem-solving. Many clients tell me that the mental clarity they experience after cutting back is one of the most welcome and unexpected benefits.
Emotional stability. Alcohol is a depressant, and regular drinking can contribute to mood swings, anxiety, and depression. As you reduce your consumption, your mood tends to stabilise and your emotional resilience improves. You may find that the anxiety or low mood you were drinking to manage actually diminishes when you drink less — because the alcohol was contributing to it.
Better relationships. Alcohol can strain relationships in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. As you drink less, you may notice that your communication improves, your patience increases, and your relationships become more authentic and satisfying.
Financial savings. The cost of regular drinking adds up quickly. Reducing your intake can free up a significant amount of money that you can redirect towards things that genuinely enrich your life.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help You Reduce Your Drinking
Hypnotherapy addresses your relationship with alcohol at the unconscious level — the level where habits, emotional associations, and ingrained beliefs are stored. This makes it a particularly powerful approach for alcohol reduction, because it targets the root causes of your drinking rather than simply trying to manage the symptoms.
Breaking the habit loop. Every habit consists of a trigger, a routine, and a reward. For alcohol, the trigger might be arriving home from work, the routine is pouring a drink, and the reward is the feeling of relaxation. Initial Chat

First Session
80–90 minutes. We explore your history, set goals, and begin treatment. You'll leave with a recording for home use.
Follow-Up Sessions
60-minute sessions building on progress. I teach you self-hypnosis and EFT for daily use between sessions.

Not unless you want to. Many clients come to me wanting to reduce their drinking rather than stop entirely, and that is a perfectly valid goal. We work towards whatever outcome feels right for you. Some clients do decide to stop completely once they experience the benefits of reduced drinking, but that is their choice.
Most clients see significant improvement in three to five sessions. However, this varies depending on the depth of the habit, the presence of emotional triggers, and your individual circumstances. We will discuss what is realistic during your initial consultation.
Hypnotherapy can be a valuable part of a comprehensive treatment plan for alcohol dependency, but if you are physically dependent on alcohol, it is important that you seek medical advice before making any changes to your drinking. Sudden withdrawal from alcohol can be dangerous for heavy, long-term drinkers. I am happy to work alongside your GP or other healthcare providers.
You may find that people comment on your reduced drinking, but this is usually positive. If you are concerned about social pressure, we can work on strategies for managing social situations where alcohol is present. Many clients find they enjoy socialising more, not less, when they are drinking moderately.
Yes. Binge drinking is often driven by specific emotional triggers or social situations, and hypnotherapy is very effective at addressing these. We can work on breaking the pattern that leads to binge episodes and replacing it with healthier responses.
Absolutely. You do not need to have a diagnosed problem to benefit from this work. Wanting to drink less is reason enough. Many of my clients simply want to develop a healthier, more balanced relationship with alcohol — and that is a perfectly worthwhile goal.
