Hypnotherapy for Fear of Needles in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Belonephobia
A fear of needles goes far beyond a mild dislike. If you live with this phobia, you will know the dread that a simple blood test can cause — the sleepless nights beforehand, the rising panic in the waiting room, the overwhelming urge to leave before your name is called. And it is not just medical situations. Sewing needles, pins, or even the sight of a needle on television can trigger that familiar rush of anxiety.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Belonephobia?
Belonephobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of needles, pins, and other sharp, pointed objects. While it is closely related to trypanophobia (fear of injections), belonephobia is broader — it can encompass not just medical needles but sewing needles, drawing pins, safety pins, and any sharp, pointed implement.

For people with belonephobia, the fear can be triggered by the sight of a needle, the thought of being pricked or pierced, or even the knowledge that needles are present nearby. The response is typically immediate and intense — a surge of adrenaline, a racing heart, a powerful urge to get away from the source of the threat.
It is important to understand that this fear is a learned response. We are not born with an inherent fear of needles. While there is a natural, healthy caution about sharp objects that serves a protective purpose, belonephobia takes this far beyond what is proportionate. Your subconscious mind has created an exaggerated danger response to needles, often stemming from a painful childhood experience with an injection, witnessing someone else's distress, or absorbing fearful attitudes from family members.
One distinctive feature of needle phobia is the vasovagal response — a tendency to feel faint or actually faint when confronted with needles. This occurs because the initial spike in blood pressure caused by the fear response is followed by a sudden drop, leading to lightheadedness or loss of consciousness. This physical response is not under voluntary control, which is why willpower alone cannot resolve needle phobia. The response needs to be addressed at the subconscious level.
Because the fear was learned, it can be unlearned. Hypnotherapy works at exactly the level where this pattern is stored, making it an ideal approach for needle phobia.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Fear of Needles
With over 30 years of experience, I have helped many clients overcome their fear of needles using a gentle, comprehensive approach. My treatment combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to address the fear at its root.
I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be shown needles or asked to handle them. There are no needles or sharp objects in my practice. All the work takes place in a calm, comfortable, needle-free environment in Wilmslow.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. My practice is a needle-free, non-clinical environment. All therapeutic work is done through hypnotherapy, EFT, and NLP. There is nothing in the room that would trigger your phobia.
Trypanophobia is specifically a fear of injections, while belonephobia is a broader fear of needles and sharp pointed objects. Many people experience both. My treatment can address whichever aspects of the fear are causing you the most difficulty.
Yes. The vasovagal fainting response is part of the same subconscious fear pattern. By addressing the underlying fear through hypnotherapy, the physical chain of events that leads to fainting is also resolved. Many clients find that their fainting tendency disappears along with the anxiety.
Most clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. Needle phobia is a specific, focused fear that tends to respond very well to hypnotherapy. We will discuss your progress together and tailor the number of sessions to your needs.
