What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is your body's natural response to perceived danger. It is part of the fight-or-flight mechanism that kept our ancestors safe from genuine physical threats. When your brain detects danger, it floods your body with stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, preparing you to either fight the threat or run from it. Your heart rate increases, your breathing quickens, your muscles tense and your senses become heightened.

The problem is that modern life has hijacked this ancient survival system. Instead of responding to a genuine physical threat, your fight-or-flight response can be triggered by work deadlines, financial worries, social situations, health concerns or simply the relentless pace of everyday life. When these stress hormones remain activated over long periods, they can cause a wide range of emotional and physical problems including disturbed sleep, a compromised immune system and persistent feelings of dread or unease.

Anxiety can manifest in many different forms. Generalised anxiety disorder involves persistent, excessive worry about a range of everyday situations. Panic disorder brings sudden, intense episodes of fear accompanied by physical symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness and shortness of breath. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) involves intrusive, unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviours performed to reduce the distress those thoughts cause. And many people experience what is commonly called overthinking — a relentless cycle of analysing, second-guessing and catastrophising that makes it impossible to switch off.

Whatever form your anxiety takes, the underlying mechanism is the same: your subconscious mind has learned to perceive certain situations, thoughts or feelings as threatening, and it responds accordingly. The key to lasting relief lies in retraining that subconscious response.

The Physical Impact of Anxiety

Anxiety is not only a mental and emotional experience — it takes a very real physical toll on your body.

Chronic muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, jaw and back, is extremely common in people with anxiety.

Over time, living in a constant state of heightened alert is genuinely exhausting.

By using hypnotherapy to calm the nervous system and reduce the activation of the stress response, we address not only the psychological symptoms of anxiety but also the physical consequences.

Anxiety is not only a mental and emotional experience — it takes a very real physical toll on your body. When your fight-or-flight response is activated frequently or continuously, the persistent flood of stress hormones causes widespread physiological effects. Your immune system becomes compromised, making you more susceptible to illness. Your digestive system is disrupted, often leading to symptoms such as nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhoea or irritable bowel syndrome. Your cardiovascular system is placed under strain, with elevated heart rate and blood pressure becoming the norm rather than the exception.

Chronic muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, jaw and back, is extremely common in people with anxiety. Many people also experience chest tightness or pain, which can be frightening and often leads to further anxiety about health. Sleep becomes disturbed — either difficulty falling asleep due to racing thoughts, or waking in the early hours with a surge of anxious energy.

Over time, living in a constant state of heightened alert is genuinely exhausting. The fatigue that accompanies chronic anxiety can be debilitating, and it often compounds the emotional symptoms, creating a cycle of tiredness, reduced coping capacity and increased anxiety.

By using hypnotherapy to calm the nervous system and reduce the activation of the stress response, we address not only the psychological symptoms of anxiety but also the physical consequences. Many clients are surprised to find that as their anxiety reduces, physical symptoms they had come to accept as normal — digestive issues, tension headaches, muscle pain — also improve significantly.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Anxiety

Clinical hypnotherapy works with anxiety in a fundamentally different way to many other approaches. Rather than simply managing symptoms on the surface, hypnotherapy communicates directly with your subconscious mind — the part of you that drives those automatic anxious responses.

During hypnosis, you enter a deeply relaxed state that allows us to bypass the critical, analytical conscious mind and work with the subconscious directly. In this state, we can identify the root causes of your anxiety, which may include past experiences, learned behaviours, negative belief systems or unresolved emotional issues. We can then begin to reframe those patterns, replacing fearful, anxious responses with calm, confident ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hypnotherapy has an excellent track record for helping with anxiety-related conditions. The combination of hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP that I use addresses anxiety at the subconscious level, where the automatic responses that drive your anxiety are stored. While every person is unique, the vast majority of my anxiety clients experience significant improvement within just a few sessions.

Absolutely. Clinical hypnotherapy is a well-established therapeutic approach with an excellent safety profile. You remain fully conscious and in control throughout every session. You cannot be made to do anything against your will, and you can bring yourself out of hypnosis at any time. It is simply a state of deep relaxation combined with focused attention.

Most anxiety clients find that between three and six sessions are sufficient to achieve meaningful, lasting change. However, this varies depending on the nature and severity of your anxiety. I will give you an honest assessment after your initial consultation.

Yes, hypnotherapy can be very effective for panic attacks. By addressing the subconscious fear patterns that trigger panic episodes, we can break the cycle. Many clients notice a significant reduction in the frequency and intensity of their panic attacks after just a few sessions.

This is one of the most common concerns people have, and I am happy to reassure you. Most people can be hypnotised — it is a natural state that we all experience regularly, such as when you become absorbed in a book or film. My job is to guide you into this relaxed state, and with over thirty years of experience, I am skilled at helping even the most analytical or sceptical minds to relax and benefit from the process.

Yes. OCD is driven by anxiety, and hypnotherapy can be very effective at addressing the underlying anxious thought patterns that fuel obsessive and compulsive behaviours. By working with the subconscious mind, we can reduce the intensity of intrusive thoughts and diminish the need to perform compulsive rituals.

My goal is always to equip you with the tools you need to manage your own wellbeing independently. The EFT and self-hypnosis techniques I teach you are designed to be used as ongoing self-help tools, so you can maintain your progress long after our sessions have ended.
