Hypnotherapy for Smoking in Wilmslow
You already know the reasons to stop. You know what smoking does to your health, your finances, your appearance, and your energy. You have probably tried to quit before — perhaps multiple times — using patches, gum, willpower, or sheer determination. And each time, despite your best intentions, the cigarettes won back.
What clients say

The Evidence: Why Hypnotherapy Works for Smoking
A comprehensive study by the University of Iowa, which analysed 48 separate studies covering more than 6,000 smokers, found that hypnotherapy had an 80% success rate for smoking cessation. This research, reported in New Scientist in October 1992, established hypnotherapy as one of the most effective methods for quitting smoking — more effective than willpower alone, nicotine replacement therapy, or other commonly used approaches.
This is not anecdotal evidence or wishful thinking. It is robust, peer-reviewed research that demonstrates what I have seen consistently in my practice over three decades: hypnotherapy works for smoking because it addresses the habit at its source.
Understanding Why You Smoke
To understand why hypnotherapy is so effective, it helps to understand what keeps you smoking.

Habit and association. Smoking is deeply woven into the fabric of your daily routine. Your morning coffee, your work breaks, your drive home, your evening wind-down — each of these has become associated with a cigarette. These associations operate automatically, beneath conscious awareness, triggering the urge to smoke before you have even decided to have one.
Stress relief. Many smokers believe that cigarettes help them manage stress. In reality, the relief you feel when you light up is not genuine stress relief — it is the relief of satisfying a nicotine craving. But your unconscious mind does not make this distinction. It has learned that smoking equals relief, and it will continue to drive you towards cigarettes whenever you feel stressed until that association is changed.
Identity. After years or decades of smoking, the habit becomes part of your identity. You think of yourself as a smoker, and this identity is maintained by your unconscious mind. As long as your unconscious sees you as a smoker, quitting feels like losing a part of yourself. This is one of the most powerful — and most underappreciated — barriers to stopping.
Social bonding. Smoking often has a social dimension. The smoking break at work, the cigarette shared with friends, the ritual of lighting up after a meal with others. These social associations can make quitting feel like social isolation.
Emotional regulation. Beyond stress, many smokers use cigarettes to manage a range of emotions — boredom, anxiety, sadness, frustration, even happiness. The cigarette has become a multipurpose emotional tool, and your unconscious mind will resist giving it up until alternative coping mechanisms are in place.
Nicotine dependency. While the psychological habit is the primary driver, nicotine does create a physical dependency. The withdrawal symptoms — irritability, restlessness, difficulty concentrating — are real, but they are short-lived (typically peaking within three days and largely subsiding within two to three weeks) and are much more manageable when the psychological habit has been addressed through hypnotherapy.
What Happens When You Stop
The benefits of stopping smoking begin almost immediately. Within twenty minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure start to normalise. Within eight hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops and oxygen levels return to normal. Within forty-eight hours, your sense of taste and smell begin to improve. Within seventy-two hours, your breathing becomes easier as your bronchial tubes relax.
Over the following weeks and months, the improvements continue. Your circulation improves, your lung function increases, and your risk of heart attack begins to fall. Within a year, your risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker. Within five years, your risk of stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.
Beyond the health benefits, the financial savings are substantial. At current prices, a twenty-a-day smoker spends thousands of pounds a year on cigarettes. That is money that could be spent on holidays, experiences, savings, or simply enjoying a better quality of life.
And then there are the intangible benefits — the freedom from standing outside in the cold, the confidence of not smelling of smoke, the pride of knowing you have beaten one of the most addictive habits there is, and the knowledge that you are protecting not just your own health but the health of those around you through the elimination of passive smoke exposure.
For many clients, just one two-hour session is enough — even for long-term heavy smokers. The depth of the unconscious work we do in that session is sufficient to break the habit completely and permanently.

How Hypnotherapy Helps You Stop Smoking
My stop smoking programme is designed to address every aspect of the smoking habit — the unconscious associations, the emotional drivers, the identity, and the physiological triggers. Here is how it works.
Breaking unconscious associations. During hypnosis, I work directly with your unconscious mind to break the automatic associations between smoking and the situations, emotions, and routines that trigger it. Your morning coffee, your work break, your evening wind-down — these stop being smoking triggers and simply become what they are. The urge that once accompanied them simply fades.
- Breaking unconscious associations
- Reprogramming the stress response
- Shifting your identity
- EFT for emotional triggers
- NLP techniques for craving management

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. For many clients, just one two-hour session is enough — even for long-term heavy smokers. The key is the depth of the unconscious work we do during that session. By addressing the habit at its source, we can create a complete shift in a single appointment. However, if you feel you need additional support, the Gold Package provides three sessions.
The length of time you have smoked does not determine how difficult it will be to stop with hypnotherapy. I have helped clients who have smoked for 20, 30, and even 40 or more years become non-smokers in a single session. What matters most is your genuine desire to stop.
This is a common concern, and we address it directly during the session. Through hypnotic suggestion, we ensure that you do not replace the smoking habit with overeating. Many clients find that stopping smoking actually motivates them to make other positive health changes, including better eating and more exercise.
Physical nicotine withdrawal symptoms are typically mild and short-lived, usually peaking within the first three days and largely subsiding within two to three weeks. Because hypnotherapy addresses the psychological habit so effectively, many clients report experiencing minimal or no withdrawal symptoms at all.
This is exactly what the three-month follow-up guarantee is for. If you feel your resolve wavering at any point within three months of your session, contact me and we will arrange additional support. This safety net gives you confidence and peace of mind.
Hypnotherapy works best when you genuinely want to stop smoking. If you are only doing it to please someone else, the results are likely to be less effective. That said, many clients come to me at the urging of a loved one and, through our initial conversation, discover that they do genuinely want to stop — they just needed the right approach.
Yes. The unconscious mechanisms that maintain vaping are very similar to those that maintain smoking, and hypnotherapy is equally effective for both.
