What is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common, long-term condition affecting the digestive system. It causes a range of symptoms including abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, diarrhoea and constipation — or an unpredictable alternation between the two. IBS is classified as a functional gastrointestinal disorder, which means the gut is not functioning properly, but there is no visible structural damage or disease process that explains the symptoms.

IBS is remarkably common, affecting a significant proportion of the population. It is more frequently diagnosed in women than men and can begin at any age, though it often first develops in early adulthood. The condition varies enormously in severity — for some people it is a mild inconvenience, while for others it is severely debilitating, affecting their ability to work, socialise and enjoy life.

One of the most important things to understand about IBS is the gut-brain connection. Your gut contains a vast network of nerves — sometimes called the "second brain" — that communicates constantly with your brain. This is why you feel butterflies in your stomach when nervous, or why stress can cause nausea, diarrhoea or stomach cramps. In IBS, this gut-brain communication becomes dysregulated. The gut becomes hypersensitive, responding excessively to normal stimuli, and the brain begins to interpret normal gut sensations as pain.

Stress and anxiety play a central role in IBS for most sufferers. Stress activates the fight-or-flight response, which directly affects gut motility, sensitivity and function. When you are anxious about having IBS symptoms, that anxiety itself triggers the very symptoms you are afraid of, creating a self-reinforcing cycle that is extremely difficult to break through conscious effort alone.

This is precisely why hypnotherapy is such an effective approach for IBS. By working with the subconscious mind to calm the nervous system, regulate the gut-brain communication and break the anxiety-symptom cycle, hypnotherapy addresses IBS at its root rather than simply managing symptoms.

The Social Impact of IBS

Read full details

One of the most difficult aspects of IBS is the way it restricts your social and professional life. Many people with IBS find themselves making decisions based on their symptoms rather than their desires. Invitations are declined, holidays are avoided, career opportunities are passed up — all because of the fear of what might happen if symptoms strike at the wrong moment.

Eating out becomes fraught with anxiety. Rather than enjoying a meal with friends, you may spend the entire evening worrying about what the food will do to your digestive system. Long car journeys, flights, meetings without easy access to a toilet, outdoor events — all of these everyday activities can become sources of significant stress for someone with IBS.

The condition can also affect intimate relationships. The embarrassment of symptoms, the need to constantly be near a bathroom, the unpredictability of flare-ups — these create barriers to spontaneity and closeness. Many people with IBS find it difficult to talk about their condition, carrying the burden in silence.

This social restriction itself becomes part of the problem. The more you limit your life because of IBS, the more anxious you become about the situations you are avoiding, which increases your overall stress levels, which worsens your symptoms. Hypnotherapy breaks this cycle by addressing the anxiety at its source, giving you back the confidence to re-engage with the activities and relationships that matter to you.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with IBS

Hypnotherapy has an excellent reputation for helping with IBS, and it is one of the conditions for which the evidence of effectiveness is particularly strong. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) includes hypnotherapy in its guidelines for IBS management, recognising its role as a therapeutic approach for this condition.

The reason hypnotherapy works so well for IBS is that it directly addresses the gut-brain connection that lies at the heart of the condition. Here is how my combined approach helps:

  • Calm the overactive nervous system that is driving your gut hypersensitivity. Through deep relaxation and targeted suggestion, we can dial down the excessive nerve activity that causes your gut to overreact to normal stimuli.
  • Regulate gut motility. Using guided imagery and suggestion, we can help to normalise the speed at which food moves through your digestive system, reducing both diarrhoea and constipation.
  • Reduce pain sensitivity. Just as your brain has turned up the volume on pain signals from your gut, hypnotherapy can help to turn it back down. Through hypnotic suggestion, we can reduce your gut's sensitivity to normal sensations, so that movements and stretching that were previously interpreted as pain return to being comfortable or unnoticed.
  • Break the anxiety-symptom cycle. By addressing the anticipatory anxiety that so often triggers IBS symptoms, we can interrupt the vicious cycle at its most critical point. When you stop fearing the symptoms, the anxiety that drives them diminishes, and the symptoms themselves reduce.
  • Promote gut healing. Through visualisation and suggestion, we can support the normal, healthy functioning of your digestive system, encouraging it to work calmly and efficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Hypnotherapy is one of the most well-supported therapeutic approaches for IBS. It works by addressing the gut-brain connection — the communication between your brain and your digestive system — which is central to the condition. Many clients experience significant and lasting improvement in their symptoms.

Most IBS clients find that three to six sessions bring meaningful improvement. Some notice changes quickly, while for others the improvement builds over several sessions. I will give you an honest assessment after our initial consultation.

Yes. Hypnotherapy works alongside any existing treatment you may be receiving. Never stop or change medication without consulting your GP. Many clients find that as their symptoms improve through hypnotherapy, they are able to discuss adjusting their medication with their doctor.

I am not a nutritionist and will not prescribe dietary changes. However, many clients find that as their gut calms down through hypnotherapy, they naturally become less reactive to foods that previously triggered symptoms. This can mean you are able to enjoy a wider range of foods with greater confidence.

Absolutely. The gut-brain connection means that your emotional state directly influences your gut function. Stress activates the fight-or-flight response, which alters gut motility, increases sensitivity and can trigger the full range of IBS symptoms. This is why addressing the stress and anxiety component through hypnotherapy can be so transformative.

Yes. Even long-standing IBS can respond well to hypnotherapy. The length of time you have had the condition does not determine your ability to improve. What matters is the therapeutic work we do together to recalibrate the gut-brain communication.

Completely. Hypnotherapy is non-invasive and has no side effects. You remain fully aware and in control throughout every session.
