Clinical name: Aviophobia
A fear of flying can take so much away from you. Maybe you have tried to push through the fear, only to spend the entire flight gripping the armrest, drenched in sweat, counting down the minutes until you land.

What Is Aviophobia?

The fear of flying is rarely about just one thing. It is often a combination of anxieties that come together in the unique environment of an aircraft. Some people fear the loss of control — being sealed inside a metal tube at 35,000 feet with no ability to leave. Others are anxious about turbulence, take-off, or landing. For some, the fear is connected to claustrophobia, the confined space of the cabin triggering feelings of being trapped. And for many, it is the fear of the fear itself — the dread of experiencing that terrible rush of panic in a situation where there is no escape.
It is important to understand that phobias are learned responses. We are not born with an inherent fear of flying. At some point, your subconscious mind learned to associate air travel with danger. This may have been triggered by a turbulent flight, a frightening news story, or even watching someone else's fearful reaction. In some cases, the phobia develops gradually without a single obvious cause.
The key point is that because this fear was learned, it can be unlearned. Your subconscious mind created the association between flying and danger, and through hypnotherapy, we can change that association to one of calm, safety, and even enjoyment.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Fear of Flying
With over 30 years of clinical experience, I have helped many clients transform their relationship with flying. My approach combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to address the fear at its source — your subconscious mind.
I want to reassure you immediately that I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to visit an airport, sit in a simulated aircraft, or do anything that causes you distress. My approach is gentle, calm, and entirely based in the comfort and safety of my practice in Wilmslow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all. I do not use exposure therapy of any kind. All the therapeutic work takes place in the calm, safe environment of my practice. Through hypnotherapy, EFT, and NLP, we address the fear at the subconscious level without you needing to confront it directly.
Most clients find that one to three sessions are enough to make a significant and lasting difference. Some people experience a complete resolution after a single session. We will discuss your progress together and decide on the best approach for you.
Yes. Because hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious mind, results can be rapid. If you have a flight approaching, get in touch as soon as possible and I will do my best to see you in time. Even a single session can make a remarkable difference.
It is never too late. The length of time you have had a phobia does not determine how quickly it can be resolved. Hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level, and your mind is capable of learning new responses regardless of how long the old pattern has been in place.
Absolutely. Hypnotherapy is a well-established therapeutic approach. You are always conscious and in control. It is simply a deeply relaxed state that allows us to communicate with your subconscious mind and make positive, lasting changes.
