Hypnotherapy for Fear of Heights in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Acrophobia
A fear of heights can restrict your life in ways that are difficult to explain to someone who has never experienced it. It goes far beyond a sensible caution at the edge of a cliff. When you have acrophobia, even moderate heights — a flight of stairs with open sides, a balcony on the second floor, a footbridge over a road — can trigger an intense physical and emotional response that feels completely overwhelming.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

For people with acrophobia, the fear often involves a disturbing sensation of being pulled towards the edge, or a terrifying feeling that the ground might give way. Some people experience intense vertigo or dizziness that makes them feel they could fall even when standing on solid, protected ground. Others describe a powerful urge to get low to the ground, to crawl, or to grip onto something solid.
The phobia frequently extends to specific situations that involve height. Crossing bridges is a very common trigger — the combination of height, open sides, and sometimes the movement of the bridge itself can provoke extreme anxiety. Glass floors, balconies, open staircases, rooftop venues, and even watching footage filmed from height can all trigger the fear response.
It is important to understand that acrophobia is a learned response. We are not born with an inherent fear of heights. While humans do have a natural, healthy respect for edges and drops — this is part of our survival instinct — acrophobia goes far beyond that useful caution. Your subconscious mind has, at some point, created an exaggerated danger response to height. This may have been triggered by a frightening experience, by witnessing someone else's fear, or it may have developed gradually without a clear cause.
Because the fear was learned, it can be unlearned. Your subconscious mind created the pattern, and through hypnotherapy, we can help it create a new, proportionate response.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Fear of Heights
With over 30 years of experience, I have helped many clients overcome their fear of heights using a gentle, integrated approach. My method combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to address the phobia at its root.
I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be taken to a high place or asked to confront your fear directly. My approach works entirely within the safe, comfortable environment of my practice in Wilmslow, using techniques that communicate with your subconscious mind.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. I do not use exposure therapy. All therapeutic work takes place in my ground-floor practice in Wilmslow. We address the fear through hypnotherapy, EFT, and NLP without you ever needing to confront the situation that frightens you.
Yes. Bridge phobia is one of the most common forms of acrophobia, and I have considerable experience helping clients with this specific trigger. The treatment will be tailored to address your bridge anxiety specifically, alongside any broader height fears.
Most clients with acrophobia see significant improvement within one to three sessions. If your phobia has multiple triggers — for example, bridges and balconies and driving on elevated roads — you may benefit from a few sessions to address each one. We will discuss this together.
That is absolutely fine. I will work at your pace, and we can begin the therapeutic work without you needing to describe your fear in graphic detail. Hypnotherapy and EFT can work effectively without you needing to relive distressing experiences.
Once the subconscious fear response has been properly resolved, the change is typically lasting. Your mind learns a new, calm response to heights, and that becomes your default. If you ever feel the old patterns beginning to return, a single top-up session is usually enough to reinforce the changes.
