Hypnotherapy for Children, Teens & Young People in Wilmslow

Children experience the world intensely. Their emotions are vivid, their imaginations are powerful, and when something goes wrong — whether it is a fear that has taken hold, anxiety about school, or a habit they cannot seem to break — it can affect every part of their young lives. As a parent, watching your child struggle is one of the most difficult experiences there is, especially when you feel you have tried everything and nothing seems to be working.

A Message for Kids, Teens and Young People

Feel calmer, stronger, more confident and in control.

If you have been feeling stressed, overwhelmed, anxious or fearful, you are not alone. Whether it is because of school, friendships, worries at home, or just feeling overwhelmed, stress and anxiety can make life feel really hard. It can affect how you think, how you sleep, how you feel inside, and how you act around other people.

I help children, teenagers and young people understand and manage anxiety in a way that is gentle, effective, and made just for you.

Therapy that fits you

Every young person is different, so I always adapt the sessions to suit you. I use language that feels natural for your age and personality. Whether you are six or sixteen, I make sure the session feels easy to follow, safe and calming. Some people learn best through stories. Others like images, resources or step-by-step strategies. However your brain works best, I will shape the session around your learning style.

Tools you can keep using

You will come away with your own toolbox of techniques to help you feel better — whether you are nervous about school, struggling to focus, feeling too emotional, or having trouble sleeping. You will also get your own therapeutic recording from the session. You can listen to it whenever you like to help you relax, feel safe, and strengthen all the positive changes we have made. Many people find it especially helpful to listen before bed or after a tricky day.

So why does stress happen?

When we feel pressure, our body sometimes thinks we are in danger — even if it is just an exam, a busy day, or being stuck in traffic. It switches on something called the "fight or flight" response, which floods the body with stress chemicals to get us ready to run, shout or freeze. This can make your heart race, give you butterflies in your tummy, make your mind feel cloudy, and leave your body tense — it can even make it hard to remember things you have learnt or know well.

That is helpful if we are in real danger, but not so helpful when the stress does not stop. If those stress chemicals do not get released properly, they stay stuck in the body. That is when people start feeling anxious, panicky, angry or exhausted. It can even make it hard to think clearly, fall asleep, or enjoy things that usually feel good. But with the right tools, you can teach your brain and body a different way to respond.

Let's help you feel better

I use a blend of clinical hypnotherapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) to help you feel:

  • Calmer and more relaxed in your body
  • Clearer, calmer and more focused in your mind — you will find your memory improves
  • More confident and in control
  • More positive in your attitude
  • Ready to handle life's challenges in a healthier way

Together, we will gently release anxiety and fear and begin to build confidence so you can get back to feeling like you again.

If you are ready to feel better, call me — Karen — on 07776 133247, or visit the contact page to get started.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work for Children?

Hypnotherapy for children works in much the same way as it does for adults, but the approach is adapted to suit a younger mind. Children are naturally imaginative, and this is something I use to great advantage during sessions. Rather than the formal, structured approach that works well with adults, sessions with children tend to be more creative, playful and story-based.

During hypnosis, a child enters a state of deep relaxation — similar to the feeling of being completely absorbed in a favourite book or a daydream. In this relaxed state, the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions and new ways of thinking. This allows us to gently change the patterns, beliefs and responses that are causing the problem.

For example, a child with a fear of dogs might be guided through an imaginative journey where they meet a friendly, gentle dog and discover that they feel calm and safe. A child struggling with exam anxiety might be helped to visualise themselves sitting in the exam room feeling confident, focused and in control. The subconscious mind does not distinguish between a vividly imagined experience and a real one, so these new positive associations become part of the child's automatic response.

I also teach children simple self-hypnosis techniques that they can use on their own whenever they need them. These are easy to learn and give children a powerful sense of control over their own feelings and responses. Many parents tell me that these techniques become a valued part of their child's daily routine long after the sessions have ended.

Why Children Respond So Well to Hypnotherapy

Children are, in many ways, ideal candidates for hypnotherapy. There are several reasons for this:

Their imaginations are naturally powerful. Children spend much of their time in a state that is very close to hypnosis already — absorbed in imaginative play, lost in stories, creating vivid mental pictures. This means they can enter a therapeutic trance easily and naturally, without any of the self-consciousness that some adults experience.

They are more open to suggestion. Children have not yet developed the critical, analytical filter that adults use to evaluate new ideas. This means that positive therapeutic suggestions are accepted more readily by the subconscious mind, leading to faster and more lasting results.

They have not been practising the problem for as long. When an adult comes to me with a phobia, they may have been reinforcing that fear for twenty, thirty, or even forty years. A child's fear, habit, or anxiety pattern has had far less time to become deeply embedded, which means it can often be resolved more quickly.

Children respond extremely well to EFT. Emotional Freedom Technique, or tapping, is something I use extensively in my work with children. It is a simple, non-invasive technique that children pick up very quickly, and it gives them a practical tool they can use anywhere — at school, at home, or in any situation where they feel anxious or upset. Many children find EFT fun and empowering, and parents often tell me their child continues to use it independently long after their sessions have finished.

What Happens During a Session?

When you first bring your child to my practice, I will spend some time talking with you and your child together to understand the issue and build rapport. It is important that your child feels comfortable with me and understands what we are going to do together. I always explain everything in age-appropriate language and make sure the child knows that they are in control at all times.

For the initial session, I encourage parents to be present so that both you and your child feel reassured and comfortable. Once your child has settled in and feels at ease with me, I find that children often respond to treatment better without an audience watching them. There is no pressure at all — we simply find what works best for your child. If you prefer to wait during the session, there is a comfortable waiting room available.

The therapeutic part of the session is always calm, gentle and positive. I may use guided imagery, storytelling, creative visualisation, EFT, or other techniques depending on what your child responds to best. Every session is tailored to the individual child — there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

I also record the therapeutic part of each session so that your child can listen to it at home. This reinforcement between sessions is incredibly valuable because it helps to strengthen the new positive associations and patterns we have created together. Many children enjoy listening to their recording at bedtime, and parents frequently tell me that it helps their child sleep better too.

The beauty of working with children is that they do not overthink the process. An adult might sit in the chair analysing whether it is working, questioning whether they are in hypnosis, wondering if they are doing it right. Children simply allow themselves to relax, follow the story or imagery, and let their subconscious mind do what it does naturally — learn, adapt and change. This is why results with children can be so remarkably quick and so lasting.

Every child is unique, and I never take a formulaic approach. Some children respond brilliantly to creative visualisation. Others engage more with storytelling. Some love the tapping of EFT because it gives them something physical and active to do. Part of my role is to discover what works best for your individual child and to tailor every session accordingly.

The Role of Self-Hypnosis for Children

One of the most valuable things I do with children is teach them simple self-hypnosis techniques. These are easy-to-learn methods that give a child a real sense of control over their own emotions and responses. A child who knows how to calm themselves down, manage a wave of anxiety, or redirect a negative thought pattern has a skill that will serve them not just now, but throughout their entire life.

Self-hypnosis for children is not complicated or mysterious. It might involve a simple breathing technique combined with a calming mental image, or a particular physical gesture — like pressing thumb and finger together — that triggers a feeling of calm and confidence. Children learn these techniques very quickly, and because they have practised them in the safe, relaxed environment of a hypnotherapy session, they can access them easily in real-world situations.

Parents frequently tell me that their child uses these techniques at school before tests, at bedtime when they cannot sleep, or in social situations that used to cause anxiety. It is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work — knowing that a child has been given a tool they can carry with them long after our sessions together have ended.

How Many Sessions Will My Child Need?

Every child is different, and the number of sessions required depends on the nature and severity of the issue. However, children typically respond to hypnotherapy more quickly than adults, and many issues can be resolved in just two to four sessions.

Simple phobias — a fear of dogs, spiders, or the dark, for example — can often be resolved in one to three sessions. More complex issues such as long-standing anxiety, low self-esteem, or emotional difficulties may require a few more sessions to address fully.

I will always be honest with you about the likely number of sessions needed, and I will never recommend more sessions than I believe are necessary. My aim is to give your child the tools and the confidence they need to move forward independently.

Common Questions from Parents

Is hypnotherapy safe for children?

Absolutely. Hypnotherapy is completely safe and natural. Your child will be relaxed and comfortable throughout the session, and they will remain fully aware of what is happening. They cannot be made to do or say anything they do not want to, and they will not be asked to revisit any traumatic experiences. The process is gentle, positive and empowering.

What age can children have hypnotherapy?

I work with children, teenagers and young people from the age of six upwards. Below this age, children generally do not have the attention span or cognitive development needed to benefit fully from hypnotherapy, although I may be able to offer guidance and techniques for parents to use at home with younger children.

Will my child be asleep during the session?

No. Hypnosis is not sleep. Your child will be in a state of deep relaxation, similar to a daydream, but they will be fully aware of everything that is happening and will remember the session afterwards.

Can I stay in the room during the session?

For the first session, I encourage parents to be present. After that, I find that most children respond better when they are on their own with me. Children often respond to treatment better without an audience watching them — they tend to relax more deeply and engage more fully with the process. However, every family is different, and we will find whatever arrangement works best for you and your child.

My child is sceptical. Will it still work?

Children are naturally curious, and even those who are initially sceptical tend to engage quickly once they realise that hypnotherapy is nothing like they might have seen on television. It is not about being controlled or made to do silly things — it is about using their own imagination to make positive changes. Most children find the experience enjoyable and are keen to come back for their next session.

My Own Experience with Phobias

I think it is important for parents to know that I am not just someone who has studied phobias and anxieties in a textbook. I have experienced a debilitating phobia myself — a severe fear of caterpillars that controlled parts of my life for years. I understand from personal experience how real and overwhelming these fears are, how irrational they can feel, and how frustrating it is when other people do not take them seriously.

Overcoming my own phobia is part of what inspired me to specialise in helping others, including children, with their fears and anxieties. When I work with your child, I bring not just thirty years of professional experience, but genuine empathy and understanding.

Taking the First Step

If your child is struggling with a fear, anxiety, habit, or any other emotional or behavioural difficulty, I would love to help. Making the decision to seek help for your child takes courage, and I want you to know that you are doing the right thing. Too many parents wait, hoping the problem will resolve on its own. Sometimes it does, but often it does not — and the longer a pattern is left to develop, the more deeply it can become embedded.

The first step is simply to get in touch for an informal, no-obligation chat. I am happy to answer any questions you may have and to discuss whether hypnotherapy might be the right approach for your child. There is no pressure and no commitment — just a friendly conversation about how I might be able to help.

You can call me on 07776 133247 or use the contact form on this website. I understand that as a parent, you want the very best for your child, and I promise to treat your child with the same warmth, patience and care that I would want for my own family.

My practice is conveniently located in Wilmslow, Cheshire, and I have been helping children and families in the area for over thirty years. I look forward to hearing from you.
