What Is Stress?

Stress is your body's natural response to perceived threat or demand. It is driven by the fight-or-flight response — a survival mechanism that evolved to protect us from physical danger. When your brain perceives a threat, it triggers a cascade of hormonal changes: adrenaline and cortisol flood your system, your heart rate increases, your muscles tense, your breathing becomes shallow and your senses sharpen. Your body is preparing to fight the threat or flee from it.

This response was perfectly designed for our ancestors, who faced genuine physical dangers — predators, rival tribes, natural disasters. The stress hormones would surge, the threat would be dealt with (or escaped from), and the body would return to a calm, balanced state.

The problem is that modern life keeps the stress response activated almost constantly. Your boss's email, the traffic jam, the overdue bills, the school WhatsApp group, the news headlines — none of these are physical threats, but your body responds to them as though they are. The fight-or-flight response fires up, but there is nothing to fight and nowhere to flee. So the stress hormones stay elevated, and your body remains in a state of high alert.

Over time, this chronic activation takes a serious toll. Cortisol — the primary stress hormone — suppresses immune function, disrupts digestion, impairs sleep, affects memory and concentration, and contributes to weight gain (particularly around the middle). Chronic stress is linked to a wide range of health problems including cardiovascular disease, digestive issues, headaches, muscle pain and mental health conditions.

What makes chronic stress particularly insidious is that it becomes normalised. You adapt to feeling stressed, and it begins to feel like your default state. You may not even recognise how stressed you are until something forces you to stop — illness, burnout, a relationship crisis. By that point, stress has been damaging your health and happiness for months or even years.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Stress

Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective approaches for chronic stress because it works at the level where stress responses are generated — the subconscious mind. While conscious strategies like time management and positive thinking can help at the surface, they often fail to reach the deeply embedded stress patterns that keep your nervous system in overdrive. Hypnotherapy goes deeper.

Resetting the Stress Response

Through hypnotherapy, I guide you into a state of profound relaxation — the opposite of the fight-or-flight state. In this deeply calm state, your nervous system has the opportunity to reset. Cortisol levels drop, muscle tension releases, heart rate slows and breathing deepens. This is not just a temporary respite — repeated sessions train your nervous system to return to calm more easily, effectively raising your threshold for stress.

  • Understand the root causes of your stress
  • Retrain your subconscious responses
  • Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
  • Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions

Many clients feel significantly calmer after their very first session. The deep relaxation experienced during hypnotherapy can provide immediate relief from tension and anxiety. Over subsequent sessions, the changes become more profound and more permanent as your subconscious stress patterns are rewired.

Absolutely. Many people feel chronically stressed without being able to point to a specific cause. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind to uncover and address stress patterns that operate below conscious awareness. You do not need to know the cause for the treatment to be effective.

Yes. Chronic stress is linked to a wide range of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, weakened immune function, sleep problems, weight gain, anxiety and depression. Managing stress is not a luxury — it is essential to your long-term health.

Stress is typically a response to an external trigger — work pressure, financial worries, relationship difficulties. Anxiety can persist even when there is no obvious trigger, manifesting as a general sense of worry or dread. In practice, the two often overlap, and hypnotherapy is effective for both.

No. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused relaxation, not a loss of control. You remain fully aware throughout and cannot be made to do anything against your will. Many clients say that hypnosis feels like the most in control they have felt in a long time.

Yes, this is a core part of my approach. I teach you both self-hypnosis and EFT techniques that you can use independently — at work, at home, or anywhere you need to manage stress in the moment. These are skills that serve you for life.

Yes, I offer both in-person sessions at my Wilmslow clinic and online sessions via video call. Online sessions are fully effective for stress management and offer the convenience of receiving treatment from home.
