Hypnotherapy for Fear of Criticism in Wilmslow

Clinical name: Criticophobia

Most people dislike being criticised. But for some, the fear of criticism goes far beyond ordinary discomfort. If you experience this fear at a phobic level, it can dominate your decisions, silence your voice and prevent you from living authentically. You might avoid speaking up in meetings, decline opportunities for promotion, withdraw from social situations, or spend hours agonising over something you said — or failed to say. The fear of being judged negatively can become a prison, quietly shrinking your world while you try to keep everyone happy.

What Is Fear of Criticism?

An intense fear of criticism is sometimes referred to as enissophobia, though it is more commonly discussed in the context of social anxiety and self-esteem. At its core, it is a disproportionate fear of being judged, evaluated or found wanting by others. While constructive feedback is a normal part of life, people with this fear experience it as a threat — triggering anxiety, shame and avoidance.

Like all fear responses, this is a learned pattern. We are not born afraid of criticism. The fear develops through experiences and observations, often in childhood. Perhaps you grew up with a highly critical parent or teacher whose approval felt impossible to earn. Perhaps you were bullied or publicly humiliated at school. Perhaps a single painful experience of rejection or harsh feedback left such a deep impression that your subconscious mind decided criticism must be avoided at all costs.

These early experiences create subconscious beliefs — "I am not good enough," "people will reject me if I make a mistake," "it is safer to stay quiet." These beliefs then drive automatic avoidance behaviours that can persist for decades, long after the original circumstances have changed.

For many people, the fear of the fear compounds the problem. You dread situations where criticism might occur, and this anticipatory anxiety causes you to withdraw, people-please or stay invisible — which in turn reinforces the belief that you cannot cope with criticism.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.

My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.

I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Criticism

If you have been living with this fear, you may have tried positive affirmations, self-help books or simply "pushing through." These approaches often produce limited results because they operate at the conscious level, while the fear itself is rooted in the subconscious. Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious, making it one of the most effective approaches for this type of deeply embedded fear.

It is important to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be put in situations designed to make you uncomfortable. My approach is gentle, supportive and entirely respectful of your sensitivity.

  • Understand the root causes of your fear of criticism

Frequently Asked Questions

It can be both. When the fear produces a disproportionate, automatic response — intense anxiety, avoidance, physical symptoms — it operates like a phobia, regardless of whether it has a specific clinical label. Hypnotherapy is effective for both phobic and anxiety-based responses.

Like all fear responses, it is learned. Common causes include growing up with critical or demanding parents, bullying, public humiliation, perfectionist environments, or experiences of harsh rejection. The subconscious mind learns that criticism is dangerous and mounts a protective response.

Yes. Perfectionism is often closely linked to a fear of criticism — if everything is perfect, there is nothing to criticise. By addressing the underlying fear, hypnotherapy can help to loosen the grip of perfectionism and allow you to take risks, make mistakes and grow.

This depends on the depth and complexity of your particular experience. Some clients see meaningful progress within two to three sessions, while others benefit from a slightly longer course. I will be honest about this during your initial consultation.

No. The goal is not to make you indifferent to others' opinions but to help you respond to feedback proportionately — taking on board what is useful without being devastated by it. You will still care about doing well, but without the paralysing anxiety.
