What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the medical term for the habitual grinding, gnashing or clenching of teeth. It can occur during waking hours, which is known as awake bruxism, or during sleep, known as sleep bruxism. Many people experience both forms. Sleep bruxism is considered a sleep-related movement disorder, and people who grind their teeth during sleep are more likely to experience other sleep-related issues such as snoring or interrupted breathing.

The forces involved in bruxism can be surprisingly powerful. During normal chewing, your teeth exert a moderate amount of pressure. During bruxism episodes, particularly during sleep when the normal protective reflexes are reduced, the pressure can be many times greater. Over time, this excessive force can cause significant damage to teeth, dental restorations, the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint or TMJ) and the surrounding muscles.

Bruxism is closely associated with stress and anxiety. When you are under psychological pressure, your body holds tension, and for many people, the jaw is a primary location where that tension accumulates. During sleep, when the conscious mind is no longer in control, this stored tension can express itself as grinding or clenching.

Other contributing factors can include an abnormal bite, missing or crooked teeth, certain medications and lifestyle factors such as high caffeine or alcohol intake. However, even when these factors are present, the subconscious stress response typically plays a significant role.

Many people underestimate just how significantly bruxism affects their overall wellbeing. The consequences extend far beyond dental damage. Chronic jaw tension and grinding can lead to persistent headaches and migraines that interfere with your ability to work, concentrate and enjoy life. The pain can radiate from the jaw into the neck, shoulders and upper back, creating widespread muscular discomfort that is often misattributed to other causes.

Sleep quality is frequently compromised. Even if you are not consciously aware of grinding during the night, the muscular activity prevents you from reaching the deepest, most restorative stages of sleep. This means you can wake feeling tired and unrested despite spending a full night in bed. Over time, this accumulated sleep deprivation affects your mood, your cognitive function and your resilience to stress — which ironically feeds back into the grinding cycle.

The dental costs of untreated bruxism can be substantial. Worn, cracked or broken teeth may require crowns, veneers or other restorations, and these can need replacing more frequently if the underlying grinding continues. By addressing the root cause through hypnotherapy, you are not only improving your quality of life but potentially saving yourself significant dental expense in the long term.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Bruxism

Because bruxism is fundamentally a subconscious habit — particularly sleep bruxism, which occurs entirely outside your conscious awareness — hypnotherapy offers a uniquely appropriate solution. It is one of the few approaches that can work directly with the subconscious patterns driving the grinding and clenching.

During hypnotherapy, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation that allows us to communicate with your subconscious mind. From this place, we can do several important things:

  • Understand the root causes of your bruxism
  • Retrain your subconscious responses
  • Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
  • Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Sleep bruxism is a subconscious behaviour, and hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious mind. Through targeted suggestions delivered during hypnosis, we can instruct your subconscious to keep your jaw relaxed during sleep. Many clients report a noticeable reduction in grinding within just a few sessions, often confirmed by their partner or by reduced jaw soreness on waking.

I would recommend continuing to use your mouth guard during the initial stages of our work together, as it protects your teeth while the new subconscious patterns are being established. As your grinding reduces, you can discuss with your dentist when it might be appropriate to stop using it.

Most bruxism clients see significant improvement within three to six sessions. The exact number depends on factors such as how long the habit has been established and the level of underlying stress or emotional factors involved. I will give you an honest assessment after our initial consultation.

Stress is the most common contributing factor, but bruxism can also be influenced by dental alignment, medications and other factors. Regardless of the initial trigger, a subconscious habit pattern becomes established, and hypnotherapy is effective at addressing that pattern whatever its original cause.

While I am not a medical practitioner and cannot treat TMJ disorder directly, many clients find that as their grinding and clenching reduces through hypnotherapy, their TMJ-related symptoms — including jaw pain, clicking, locking and headaches — improve significantly as a result.

The subconscious changes made through hypnotherapy tend to be lasting, particularly when reinforced with the self-help tools I provide. The recordings and EFT techniques give you ongoing resources to maintain jaw relaxation and manage stress, helping to prevent the bruxism pattern from re-establishing itself.

Yes. While sleep bruxism gets the most attention, daytime clenching is equally damaging and equally responsive to treatment. For daytime clenching, we use a combination of NLP and EFT to help you become aware of the moments when you clench — often during concentration, driving or stressful situations — and replace the clenching response with automatic jaw relaxation. Many clients are surprised at how quickly this new habit becomes established.

No referral is needed. You are welcome to book directly with me. However, I would always recommend maintaining regular dental check-ups so that your dentist can monitor the health of your teeth and jaw joint alongside our therapeutic work.
