What Is PMT?

Premenstrual tension (PMT), also known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), refers to a collection of physical and emotional symptoms that occur in the days leading up to a menstrual period. Symptoms typically begin one to two weeks before menstruation and resolve shortly after the period starts.

PMT is caused by the hormonal fluctuations that occur as part of the menstrual cycle. In the second half of the cycle — after ovulation — levels of progesterone rise and then fall sharply just before menstruation begins. These hormonal shifts affect neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly serotonin, which plays a key role in regulating mood, sleep and appetite.

While virtually all women of reproductive age experience some premenstrual changes, the severity varies enormously. For some, symptoms are mild and barely noticeable. For others, they are severe enough to significantly disrupt work, relationships and daily life. In its most severe form — known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) — the emotional symptoms can be profoundly debilitating.

What is particularly important to understand is that hormonal changes are the trigger, but they are not the whole story. Two women with identical hormone levels can experience very different degrees of PMT. The difference often lies in how the subconscious mind and nervous system respond to those hormonal signals. Factors such as stress levels, emotional wellbeing, past experiences and learned patterns of response all influence the severity of symptoms.

This is why hypnotherapy is so effective for PMT. By working with the subconscious mind, we can change the way your body and mind respond to the natural hormonal fluctuations of your cycle, reducing the intensity of symptoms without altering the hormones themselves.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with PMT

Hypnotherapy offers a drug-free, natural approach to managing PMT symptoms by working with the subconscious mind to change the way your body and mind respond to hormonal changes. My combined approach of Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP addresses PMT from multiple angles.

Regulating Emotional Responses

The emotional symptoms of PMT — mood swings, irritability, anxiety, tearfulness — are driven by the interaction between hormonal changes and the subconscious mind's response patterns. Through hypnotherapy, we can help your subconscious mind develop calmer, more balanced responses to hormonal fluctuations. Rather than your emotions swinging dramatically, you develop a greater sense of emotional stability throughout your cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. While hypnotherapy does not change your hormone levels, it can significantly change how your body and mind respond to hormonal fluctuations. Many women experience a substantial reduction in both emotional and physical symptoms. The mind-body connection is powerful, and working with it through hypnotherapy can produce results that surprise even sceptics.

Most clients see meaningful improvement within three to six sessions. Some women notice changes after the very first session, while others see a gradual improvement over several menstrual cycles. I will give you an honest assessment of what to expect during your initial consultation.

Absolutely. Hypnotherapy is entirely safe alongside any medication, hormonal treatments or supplements you may be using. It is a complementary approach that works with your mind rather than your chemistry, so there are no contraindications.

Yes, the changes made at a subconscious level are designed to be lasting. Additionally, the self-hypnosis and EFT techniques you learn give you tools you can use for the rest of your life. If symptoms do return during particularly stressful periods, a top-up session can help.

I work with women across the full spectrum of premenstrual symptoms, from mild PMT to severe PMDD. While PMDD may require a longer course of treatment and is often best managed alongside medical support, hypnotherapy can play a valuable role in managing the emotional and psychological symptoms.

Please do not worry. I have worked with women on these issues for over 30 years, and there is nothing you can tell me that I have not heard before. My clinic is a completely safe, confidential and non-judgemental space. Your comfort is my priority.
