What Is Postnatal Depression?

Postnatal depression (PND) is a type of depression that develops after the birth of a baby. It can begin within weeks of delivery or emerge more gradually over the first year. It is different from the "baby blues" — the brief period of tearfulness and mood swings that many women experience in the first week or two after birth, which is caused by the sudden hormonal shift following delivery and typically resolves on its own.

Postnatal depression is more persistent and more severe. It can affect any woman regardless of age, background, whether the pregnancy was planned, or whether the birth went well. It can also develop after the birth of any child — not just the first. Some women experience it after what appeared to be a straightforward pregnancy and birth, which can make the condition even more confusing and distressing.

The causes of postnatal depression are complex and usually involve a combination of factors. Hormonal changes play a significant role — the dramatic drop in oestrogen and progesterone after birth can affect brain chemistry and mood regulation. But hormones are only part of the picture. Sleep deprivation, the physical demands of recovery, the overwhelming responsibility of caring for a new life, changes in identity and relationships, isolation, and any complications during pregnancy or birth can all contribute.

For some women, postnatal depression may also be connected to earlier life experiences — past trauma, difficult relationships, unresolved grief or pre-existing vulnerability to anxiety or depression. These factors can make the transition to motherhood more challenging at a subconscious level.

It is important to understand that postnatal depression is not a choice, not a weakness, and not something you can simply snap out of. It is a condition that responds to treatment, and seeking help is one of the strongest things you can do for yourself and your baby.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Postnatal Depression

Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind — the part of you that drives emotions, automatic responses and deeply held beliefs. In postnatal depression, the subconscious mind can become locked in patterns of negative thinking, self-doubt and emotional numbness. Hypnotherapy helps to gently unlock these patterns and create new, more positive pathways.

Lifting the Emotional Fog

One of the most distressing aspects of postnatal depression is the emotional flatness — the inability to feel the joy and connection you expected. Hypnotherapy can help by working with your subconscious mind to release the emotional blockages that depression creates. Many clients describe it as the fog beginning to lift, allowing genuine emotions to flow again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, completely. Hypnotherapy is a natural, drug-free therapy that involves no substances or medications. It is entirely safe while breastfeeding and can actually support your overall wellbeing during this demanding time.

Of course. I understand that arranging childcare for a small baby is not always possible. You are welcome to bring your baby to in-person sessions, or many new mothers find online sessions more convenient, as they can feed and tend to their baby while still engaging fully in the treatment.

You can begin hypnotherapy at any time after birth. There is no minimum waiting period. The sooner you seek support, the sooner you can begin to feel better.

No. Hypnotherapy is fully compatible with antidepressant medication. It works through a completely different mechanism — engaging with the subconscious mind rather than brain chemistry — and many clients find that the two approaches complement each other effectively.

I completely understand — this is one of the cruelest aspects of depression, that it can make seeking help feel impossible. Online sessions are available if leaving the house feels too much, and you can call me on 07776 133247 for an informal conversation before committing to anything. There is no pressure.

No. The baby blues are very common, affecting most new mothers in the first week or two after birth, and resolve on their own. Postnatal depression is more persistent, more severe and requires support. If your low mood lasts beyond two weeks or is significantly affecting your daily functioning, it may be postnatal depression and it is worth seeking help.

Yes, postnatal depression can affect fathers too, and hypnotherapy can be equally helpful for men experiencing this condition. If you are a new father struggling with your mental health, you are welcome to contact me.
