Hypnotherapy for Psoriasis in Wilmslow

Living with psoriasis is about so much more than having a skin condition. It is the self-consciousness when you roll up your sleeves. The dread of summer when others wear shorts and t-shirts without a second thought. The endless cycle of creams, treatments and medical appointments. The frustration of a flare-up appearing just when you thought things were improving. And underneath it all, the stress — stress that you know is making the condition worse, but which the condition itself creates.

What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the rapid overproduction of skin cells. In a healthy person, skin cells are produced and replaced over a period of around three to four weeks. In psoriasis, this process is dramatically accelerated, with new skin cells being produced in just a few days. The excess cells build up on the surface of the skin, creating the raised, red, scaly patches that characterise the condition.

The most common form is plaque psoriasis, which produces well-defined patches covered with silvery-white scales. These patches can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. Other forms include guttate psoriasis (small, drop-shaped patches), inverse psoriasis (smooth, red patches in skin folds), pustular psoriasis (pus-filled blisters) and erythrodermic psoriasis (widespread redness and shedding of skin).

Psoriasis is not contagious — it cannot be caught from or passed to another person. It is an immune system condition with a genetic component, meaning it tends to run in families. However, having the genetic predisposition does not guarantee that psoriasis will develop — environmental triggers play a crucial role in activating and exacerbating the condition.

And this is where the mind-body connection becomes critically important. Stress is one of the most significant triggers for psoriasis flare-ups. When you are stressed, your body produces inflammatory chemicals as part of the stress response. In someone with psoriasis, these inflammatory chemicals can trigger or worsen an episode. The condition itself causes stress — the discomfort, the appearance, the unpredictability — which in turn triggers further inflammation. This creates a vicious cycle where stress feeds psoriasis and psoriasis feeds stress.

Other common triggers include infections, skin injuries, certain medications, smoking, alcohol, cold weather and hormonal changes. But stress remains the trigger that clients most frequently identify as driving their flare-ups.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Psoriasis

Hypnotherapy does not claim to cure psoriasis — it is a complex autoimmune condition that requires appropriate medical management. However, hypnotherapy can play a powerful complementary role by addressing the stress, emotional distress and psychological impact that are so deeply intertwined with the condition.

Breaking the Stress-Flare Cycle

The most significant contribution hypnotherapy can make is breaking the cycle between stress and psoriasis flare-ups. By guiding you into deep states of relaxation and working with the subconscious mind to change your stress responses, hypnotherapy can help reduce the inflammatory stress hormones that trigger episodes. When your baseline stress levels are lower, the frequency and severity of flare-ups often decrease.

  • Understand the root causes of your psoriasis

Frequently Asked Questions

Hypnotherapy does not cure psoriasis — it is a chronic autoimmune condition that currently has no cure. However, by reducing stress, managing emotional triggers and improving your overall wellbeing, hypnotherapy can help reduce the frequency and severity of flare-ups and improve your quality of life.

Stress triggers the release of inflammatory chemicals in the body. In someone with psoriasis, these chemicals can activate or worsen the immune response that causes skin cells to overproduce. Reducing stress through hypnotherapy can therefore have a direct positive effect on the condition.

Most clients benefit from three to six sessions. The number depends on the severity of your condition, how significantly stress is contributing to your flare-ups, and how you respond to treatment. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation.

Yes, completely. Hypnotherapy involves no drugs or substances and does not interfere with any topical treatments, biologics, immunosuppressants or other medications you may be using. Always continue your prescribed treatments as directed by your doctor.

Absolutely. Even if the physical symptoms remain unchanged, addressing the emotional toll of psoriasis — the self-consciousness, the frustration, the impact on confidence — can dramatically improve your quality of life. Many clients find that feeling better emotionally about their condition is itself transformative.

No. There is no need to show me your skin during our sessions. I work with the mind, not the skin. Our conversation about your experience is all I need to tailor your treatment effectively.

Yes, I offer both in-person and online sessions. Online treatment is fully effective for psoriasis-related hypnotherapy, as we are working with the mind and emotional responses rather than treating the skin directly.
