Hypnotherapy for Fear of Dogs in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Cynophobia
In a nation of dog lovers, living with cynophobia — a fear of dogs — can feel incredibly isolating. Dogs are everywhere: in parks, on pavements, in friends' homes, in shops and cafes. For most people, encountering a dog is unremarkable or even pleasant. But if you experience this phobia, every walk, every visit to a friend's home and every trip to the park carries the potential for panic. You may cross the street to avoid a dog, decline invitations to homes where dogs live, or find yourself unable to enjoy outdoor spaces during busy times.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Cynophobia?
Cynophobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of dogs. It is one of the most common specific phobias and can range from anxiety around certain breeds to a generalised fear of all dogs, regardless of size or temperament. For some people, even a small dog on a lead can trigger a powerful fear response.

Like all phobias, cynophobia is a learned response. We are not born afraid of dogs — as young children, we are naturally curious about animals. The fear develops through experience or observation. Perhaps you were bitten, jumped on or knocked over by a dog as a child. Perhaps you witnessed someone else being frightened or hurt by a dog. Perhaps a parent's anxiety around dogs was absorbed by your young, impressionable mind. Sometimes the original incident has been forgotten, but the emotional imprint remains firmly embedded in the subconscious.
The fear of the fear is a particularly powerful factor in cynophobia. Because dogs are so common in daily life, you may spend significant energy anticipating encounters and planning routes to avoid them. This constant hypervigilance and anticipatory anxiety can be exhausting and can progressively shrink your comfort zone.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Dogs
If you have been managing your cynophobia through avoidance, you will know that it provides no lasting relief — and may actually worsen the phobia over time. You may be relieved to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to meet a dog, stroke a dog or be in the same room as one. My approach is gentle, safe and works with your subconscious mind.
Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious — where your fear response to dogs is stored and maintained. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes receptive to positive change. In this calm state, it becomes possible to reprogram the way your mind responds to dogs, allowing you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of dogs
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Whether your fear is focused on large dogs, small dogs, specific breeds, or all dogs generally, I can tailor the treatment to your particular triggers and experience.
A dog bite is one of the most common triggers for cynophobia. The combination of hypnotherapy and EFT is particularly effective for processing traumatic experiences like bites, reducing the emotional charge so that your subconscious no longer responds as though every dog poses the same threat.
Most phobia clients find significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation.
Absolutely not. I do not use exposure therapy. All treatment takes place in the comfort of my practice, with no dogs present. The change happens in your subconscious mind, not through forced encounters.
I work primarily with adults. If you have concerns about a child's fear of dogs, I am happy to discuss whether my approach might be appropriate. Please call to talk through your situation.
