Hypnotherapy for Fear of Insects in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Entomophobia
When you have a fear of insects, the warmer months that everyone else looks forward to can fill you with dread. Open windows, garden barbecues, countryside walks, eating outdoors — all of these everyday pleasures become stressful because of the possibility that an insect might appear. And it is not just the warmer months. A spider in the bath in November, a moth circling a lamp in the evening, or a fly buzzing around the kitchen can trigger that same rush of fear at any time of year.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Entomophobia?
Entomophobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of insects. It is one of the most common specific phobias and can range from a general fear of all insects to a more focused anxiety about particular types, such as wasps, beetles, cockroaches, or flying insects.

For people with entomophobia, the fear response is typically triggered by the insects' appearance, movement, or unpredictability. The sudden, erratic flight of a wasp, the rapid scuttling of a beetle, or the crawling sensation of an insect on the skin can all provoke intense panic that feels completely disproportionate to the actual threat.
It is important to understand that this fear is a learned response. We are not born with an inherent fear of insects. Your subconscious mind has, at some point, created an association between insects and danger. This might have stemmed from a frightening childhood encounter, from witnessing a parent or sibling react fearfully, or from learning about insects that bite or sting. In some cases, the origin is not clear at all — the subconscious can create these associations without our conscious awareness.
The key insight is that because the fear was learned, it can be unlearned. Your subconscious mind has the capacity to form new associations, and through hypnotherapy, we can help it replace the old fear response with one of calm and confidence.
Entomophobia often extends beyond the insects themselves. Many sufferers develop anxiety about the environments where insects are likely to be found — gardens, parks, woodlands, and even their own homes during certain seasons. This avoidance behaviour can progressively shrink a person's world, which is why effective treatment is so valuable.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Fear of Insects
With over 30 years of clinical experience, I use a gentle yet powerful approach to help clients overcome entomophobia. My method combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), creating an integrated treatment that addresses the phobia from multiple angles.
I want to emphasise that I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be shown insects, asked to handle them, or placed in any situation that causes you distress. My approach is calm, supportive, and entirely focused on working with your subconscious mind in the safe environment of my practice in Wilmslow.

That is perfectly fine. Many people cannot pinpoint the origin of their phobia, and it does not affect the success of treatment. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind, which can process and resolve the fear regardless of whether the conscious mind remembers how it began.
