Hypnotherapy for Fear of Escalators in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Escalaphobia
If the thought of stepping onto an escalator fills you with dread, you are not alone. For many people, what seems like an ordinary part of a shopping trip or commute becomes a source of genuine panic. You might find yourself taking the long way round to find a lift, avoiding shopping centres altogether, or feeling a rising sense of anxiety the moment you see those moving steps ahead of you.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is a Fear of Escalators?
A fear of escalators, sometimes referred to as escalaphobia, is an intense and irrational fear triggered by the sight, thought, or use of escalators. While it might seem unusual to those who have never experienced it, this phobia is more common than many people realise and can be connected to a number of underlying anxieties.

For some people, the fear centres on the movement itself. The sensation of the ground shifting beneath your feet, combined with the height as you travel between floors, can trigger a powerful sense of vulnerability and loss of control. For others, the anxiety is about the mechanics of the escalator — the fear that clothing, shoelaces, or fingers could become trapped in the moving parts. Some people find the transition at the top or bottom particularly distressing, worrying about the timing of stepping on or off.
It is important to understand that phobias like this are learned responses. We are not born with an inherent fear of escalators. At some point, your subconscious mind learned to associate escalators with danger. This may have happened through a direct experience, such as a stumble or a near-miss as a child, or through witnessing someone else's fear or distress. In some cases, the phobia develops without any obvious triggering event — the subconscious mind can create associations in ways that are not always immediately clear to us.
Whatever the origin, the result is the same: your brain has developed an automatic fear response that kicks in whenever you encounter an escalator. The rational part of your mind may well know that escalators are safe, but the emotional, subconscious part overrides that logic with a flood of anxiety. This is why willpower alone rarely works to overcome a phobia — the response is happening at a deeper level than conscious thought.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Escalator Phobia
As a clinical hypnotherapist with over 30 years of experience, I use a gentle, effective approach to help clients overcome phobias like a fear of escalators. My method combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to address the fear at its root.
It is important to say straight away that I do not use exposure therapy. You will never be asked to force yourself onto an escalator or to confront your fear in a way that causes you distress. My approach is quite the opposite — it is calm, supportive, and works with your subconscious mind rather than against it.

Yes, completely. Hypnotherapy is a well-established therapeutic technique. You remain conscious and in control throughout the session. It is simply a state of deep relaxation that allows us to work with your subconscious mind to make positive changes.
Please do not let embarrassment hold you back. I have worked with clients on every kind of phobia over the past 30 years, and there is no fear too unusual or too small. Phobias are learned responses, and they deserve to be taken seriously. You will be met with complete understanding and compassion.
Yes. It does not matter how long you have had your phobia. Because hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level, where the fear response is stored, it can be effective regardless of how long the pattern has been in place. Some of my most rewarding results have been with clients who had lived with their fear for decades.
