Hypnotherapy for Fear of Small Spaces in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Claustrophobia
Claustrophobia can turn ordinary, everyday situations into sources of intense anxiety. Lifts, tunnels, aeroplanes, MRI scanners, crowded rooms, even a car with the windows up — any enclosed space can trigger that suffocating feeling of panic that makes you desperate to get out. The walls seem to close in, your breathing becomes shallow and rapid, and every instinct in your body tells you to escape.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Claustrophobia?
Claustrophobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of enclosed or confined spaces. It is one of the most common specific phobias and can range from mild discomfort in tight spaces to severe panic that prevents a person from entering any enclosed environment.

The fear typically centres on two core anxieties: restriction and suffocation. People with claustrophobia often fear being unable to move freely, feeling trapped with no way out, or not having enough air to breathe. These fears combine to create a powerful sense of vulnerability and loss of control in enclosed environments.
Common triggers include lifts, underground trains, tunnels, small rooms, aircraft cabins, MRI scanners, crowded venues, and any situation where the exit is not immediately accessible. For some people, even wearing a tight collar, a seatbelt, or a face covering can trigger a claustrophobic response.
It is important to understand that claustrophobia is a learned response. We are not born with an inherent fear of enclosed spaces. Your subconscious mind has, at some point, created an association between confined spaces and danger. This may have stemmed from a childhood experience of being locked in, trapped, or confined. It can develop after a frightening experience in a lift or tunnel. Sometimes it appears without any obvious triggering event — the subconscious can create these associations in ways that are not always clear to the conscious mind.
Because the fear was learned, it can be unlearned. Through hypnotherapy, we can work with your subconscious to replace the panic response with calm and confidence.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Claustrophobia
With over 30 years of clinical experience, I have helped many clients overcome claustrophobia using a gentle, comprehensive approach. My treatment combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to address the fear at its root.
I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be placed in an enclosed space or asked to confront your fear in any way that causes distress. All the work takes place in a comfortable, well-ventilated room in my Wilmslow practice, and I am always mindful of creating an environment where you feel safe and at ease.

Frequently Asked Questions
My treatment room is a comfortable, well-ventilated space with natural light. I understand that the environment is particularly important for someone with claustrophobia, and I ensure the room feels open, calm, and safe.
Absolutely not. I do not use exposure therapy. All therapeutic work is done through hypnotherapy, EFT, and NLP in my practice. You will not be asked to enter any enclosed space as part of your treatment.
Yes. If you have an MRI or another medical procedure coming up that involves confinement, please get in touch as soon as possible. I can prioritise preparing you for that specific situation, and even a single session can make a significant difference to your ability to cope.
Most clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. If your claustrophobia has multiple triggers — lifts, tunnels, crowds, medical procedures — you may benefit from a few sessions to address each area. We will discuss this together.
Yes, this is quite common. Claustrophobia can develop after a stressful experience, a period of heightened anxiety, or sometimes without any obvious trigger. Having been comfortable in enclosed spaces previously does not prevent the phobia from developing, and it does not prevent it from being resolved.
