Hypnotherapy for Fear of Snakes in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Ophidiophobia
A fear of snakes is one of the most common phobias, yet the distress it causes is often underestimated by those who do not share it. While the UK has very few wild snakes and only one venomous species, for someone with ophidiophobia, the fear extends far beyond the likelihood of actually encountering one. A snake on a nature documentary, a reptile house at the zoo, a picture in a book, or even a coiled garden hose that briefly looks snake-like can all trigger an intense, overwhelming fear response.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Ophidiophobia?
Ophidiophobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of snakes. It is one of the most prevalent specific phobias worldwide, affecting people across all cultures and age groups. The fear can range from strong discomfort when snakes are mentioned to full panic attacks triggered by images, sounds, or the thought of snakes.

Several features of snakes tend to provoke the strongest fear responses. Their sinuous, limbless movement is fundamentally different from how other animals move, and this unusual locomotion can feel deeply unsettling. Their ability to remain still and camouflaged, then strike suddenly, creates a sense of hidden threat. The association between snakes and venom adds a perceived danger element, even when the species in question is completely harmless.
It is important to understand that ophidiophobia is a learned response. We are not born with an inherent fear of snakes. While some research suggests humans may have an evolved readiness to learn to fear snakes more quickly than other objects, the phobic response itself is not innate — it is created by experience. A frightening encounter with a snake, seeing a parent react fearfully, absorbing cultural messages about snakes being dangerous, or even a vivid dream can all serve as the starting point for the phobia.
The key understanding is that because the fear was learned by your subconscious mind, it can be unlearned. Through hypnotherapy, we can help your subconscious form a new, calm response to snakes, replacing the old panic pattern.
The phobia can also extend to snake-like objects and imagery. Many people with ophidiophobia react to anything that visually resembles a snake — hoses, ropes, cables, certain patterns — and this generalisation of the fear response can make the phobia feel particularly pervasive.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Fear of Snakes
With over 30 years of experience treating phobias, I use a gentle, integrated approach that combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This combination is highly effective for animal phobias like ophidiophobia because it addresses the fear at every level.
I want to be very clear that I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be shown snakes, asked to handle them, or placed anywhere near them. My approach is entirely gentle and takes place in the safe, comfortable environment of my practice in Wilmslow.

Yes. Ophidiophobia is not really about the probability of encountering a snake — it is about the subconscious fear response. Whether your fear is triggered by actual snakes, images, documentaries, or snake-like objects, hypnotherapy can address the underlying pattern. Many UK clients find that their phobia restricts countryside walks, zoo visits, holidays abroad, and even watching television comfortably.
Most clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. Creature phobias tend to be among the most responsive conditions to hypnotherapy. We will discuss your progress together and tailor the number of sessions to your needs.
This is very common with ophidiophobia. The fear often generalises to snake-like objects such as hoses, ropes, and cables. The treatment addresses the underlying pattern that drives all of these responses, so as the core fear resolves, the reactions to similar objects tend to diminish as well.
While humans may have an evolved sensitivity that makes snake fears easier to acquire, the phobic response itself is learned, not hardwired. This means it can be changed through therapeutic intervention. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind where the learned response is stored, making it highly effective regardless of how the fear originated.
