Hypnotherapy for Bed-Wetting in Wilmslow

If your child is still wetting the bed, or if you are an adult dealing with this issue yourself, you will know just how distressing and isolating it can feel. Bed-wetting can affect confidence, self-esteem and everyday life in ways that people who have not experienced it may find difficult to understand. Sleepovers become a source of dread rather than excitement. School trips feel impossible. And for adults, the embarrassment can be profound, affecting relationships and making travel or staying away from home deeply stressful.

What is Bed-Wetting?

Bed-wetting, known medically as nocturnal enuresis, is the involuntary passing of urine during sleep. It is extremely common in young children and is considered a normal part of development up to around the age of five or six. Beyond that age, it is still more common than many people realise, and it can occasionally persist into the teenage years and adulthood.

There are two main types of bed-wetting. Primary nocturnal enuresis refers to children who have never achieved consistent dryness at night. Secondary nocturnal enuresis describes bed-wetting that begins after a child has been reliably dry for at least six months. Secondary enuresis can sometimes be triggered by stress, change or emotional upheaval, though there may also be physical factors involved.

In most cases, bed-wetting occurs because the connection between the bladder and the brain during sleep has not yet fully matured. The bladder sends a signal that it is full, but the sleeping brain does not register it strongly enough to wake the child. This is not a conscious choice — it happens entirely below the level of awareness. It is also worth noting that bed-wetting often runs in families, which suggests there is a genetic component to the timing of when this brain-bladder connection fully develops.

For adults, bed-wetting can be linked to stress, anxiety, sleep disorders or underlying medical conditions. It is always worth consulting your GP to rule out any physical causes before seeking hypnotherapy, though in many cases no medical cause is found.

Whatever the cause, the good news is that hypnotherapy can help by working directly with the subconscious mind to strengthen that vital communication between brain and bladder during sleep.

Supporting Your Child Through the Process

As a parent, your role in supporting your child through bed-wetting is incredibly important. The way the issue is handled at home can either reinforce the problem or help to resolve it. Children who feel ashamed, punished or pressured about bed-wetting typically experience more anxiety, which in turn makes the bed-wetting worse. Conversely, children who feel supported, understood and encouraged tend to respond much more positively to treatment.

I always work closely with parents to ensure that the home environment supports the therapeutic work we are doing together. This includes practical guidance on how to talk to your child about the issue in a way that is reassuring rather than pressuring, how to handle wet nights calmly and without fuss, and how to celebrate dry nights without creating performance pressure.

It is also worth knowing that many children feel a tremendous sense of relief simply from knowing that someone understands their problem and is going to help them. The first session often produces a visible shift in a child's demeanour — from anxious and embarrassed to hopeful and engaged. That shift in itself can be the beginning of change.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Bed-Wetting

Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective approaches for bed-wetting because it works at exactly the level where the problem exists — the subconscious mind. During sleep, your conscious mind is offline, and your subconscious is in charge. If the subconscious has not learned to recognise and act on bladder signals during sleep, no amount of conscious effort during the day will solve the problem.

During hypnotherapy, we communicate directly with the subconscious mind in a state of deep relaxation. For children, this process is gentle, imaginative and often enjoyable. Children are naturally excellent at using their imagination, which makes them particularly responsive to hypnotic suggestions. I use age-appropriate language, stories and imagery to help the child's subconscious mind understand and respond to the signals from the bladder during sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

I treat children from the age of six. By this age, most children have developed sufficient concentration and imagination to benefit from hypnotherapy. If your child is younger than six and you are concerned about bed-wetting, it may be worth speaking to your GP first, as bed-wetting is very common and often resolves naturally in younger children.

Yes, completely. Hypnotherapy for children is gentle, non-invasive and entirely safe. Your child remains aware and in control throughout. Most children find the experience deeply relaxing and enjoyable — many describe it as being like a lovely daydream. I have extensive experience working with children and always ensure the process is age-appropriate and comfortable.

Most children see significant improvement within three to six sessions. Some respond even more quickly. After the initial consultation, I will give you an honest assessment of what I think will be needed for your child's specific situation.

For younger children, parents are welcome to stay in the room during the session. For older children and teenagers, I will discuss with you and your child what feels most comfortable. Some older children prefer a degree of privacy, while others like having a parent present. There is no right or wrong answer — we simply do whatever helps your child feel most at ease.

It is always a good idea to have your child checked by your GP to rule out any underlying medical causes for bed-wetting, such as a urinary tract infection or diabetes. In most cases, no medical cause is found, and hypnotherapy can then address the subconscious patterns involved.

Yes. While bed-wetting is more commonly associated with children, adults can also experience this issue. Hypnotherapy can be very effective for adult nocturnal enuresis, particularly when stress, anxiety or emotional factors are involved. The process is essentially the same — working with the subconscious to strengthen brain-bladder communication during sleep.

I will provide a recording for your child to listen to at bedtime, and I will teach them simple EFT techniques they can use if they feel anxious. Consistent use of the bedtime recording is the most important thing you can do to support the process between sessions.
