Hypnotherapy for Night Fears in Wilmslow
Sleep should be a time of rest and restoration, but when nightmares or night fears take hold, bedtime can become a source of genuine dread. You may lie awake fearing what your mind will produce once you drift off. You may wake in the small hours with your heart pounding, drenched in sweat, gripped by a terror that takes minutes or even hours to shake off. And the next morning, the lingering unease follows you through the day, leaving you exhausted and on edge.

What Are Night Fears and Nightmares?
Nightmares and night fears are distinct but related sleep disturbances that can significantly affect quality of life.
Nightmares are vivid, disturbing dreams that typically occur during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep — the phase of sleep associated with dreaming. They often involve themes of threat, danger, being chased, falling, or losing control. The dreamer usually wakes during or immediately after the nightmare and can recall the dream content in detail. The emotional residue — fear, anxiety, sadness — can persist long after waking.
Night terrors (also called sleep terrors) are a different phenomenon. They occur during deep non-REM sleep, usually in the first few hours after falling asleep. During a night terror, a person may sit up in bed, scream, thrash about or appear terrified, yet they are not fully awake and typically have no memory of the episode the next morning. Night terrors are more common in children but can also affect adults.
Sleep anxiety is the fear and dread associated with going to sleep, which can develop when someone has experienced repeated nightmares or night terrors. This anticipatory anxiety can itself cause insomnia, creating a cycle of poor sleep that worsens the problem.
Several factors can contribute to night fears and nightmares. Stress and anxiety are among the most significant — when the mind is processing worry, conflict or emotional distress during the day, this material can emerge in vivid and distressing form during sleep. Traumatic experiences, whether recent or from the distant past, frequently manifest as recurring nightmares. Changes in routine, medication side effects, illness and overtiredness can all play a role.
In children, night terrors are particularly common between the ages of three and eight. While most children outgrow them, the experience can be frightening for both the child and their parents. Children's nightmares may be linked to developmental stages, school worries, family changes or simply an active imagination processing the day's events.
What is crucial to understand is that nightmares and night fears are not random — they are produced by the subconscious mind. And because the subconscious mind is exactly what hypnotherapy works with, it is an exceptionally well-suited treatment for these conditions.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Night Fears
Hypnotherapy is uniquely suited to treating nightmares and night fears because it works directly with the subconscious mind — the same part of the mind that generates dreams. By accessing the subconscious in a safe, controlled setting, we can influence the processes that produce disturbing dreams and fearful responses during sleep.
Addressing the Root Cause
Recurring nightmares are often the subconscious mind's way of processing unresolved emotions, stress or past experiences. Through hypnotherapy, we can explore what lies beneath the nightmares without the distress of reliving them. By addressing the underlying emotional material, the need for the subconscious to express it through nightmares diminishes.
- Understand the root causes of your night fears
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, hypnotherapy can be highly effective for reducing or eliminating recurring nightmares. By working with the subconscious mind to address the emotional patterns driving the nightmares and using techniques like dream rehearsal, many clients find that their disturbing dreams reduce significantly or stop completely.
Absolutely. Hypnotherapy is gentle and non-invasive, and children tend to respond very well to it. I work with children from age six upwards, using age-appropriate techniques that children find comfortable and often enjoyable. I also record sessions for children to listen to at home, reinforcing the positive suggestions at bedtime.
Children often respond more quickly than adults because their subconscious minds are more flexible and receptive. Many children show significant improvement within two to four sessions, though this depends on the individual child and the nature of their night fears.
Hypnotherapy can be very effective for nightmares linked to past trauma. The approach is always gentle and safe — you are never made to relive traumatic experiences. Instead, we work with the subconscious mind to process and resolve the emotional impact of the experience, which in turn reduces the nightmares.
No. Despite the name, hypnosis is not sleep. You will be in a state of deep, focused relaxation while remaining fully aware and in control. You can open your eyes and end the session at any time you choose.
Most clients maintain their improvement long-term, especially when they continue to use the self-hypnosis and EFT techniques I teach. If night fears do return — for example, during a particularly stressful period — a single top-up session is usually sufficient to address them.
Yes, I offer both in-person and online sessions. Online treatment is fully effective for night fears and nightmares, and it can be particularly convenient for parents seeking help for their children.
