Hypnotherapy for Fibromyalgia in Wilmslow

If you are living with fibromyalgia, you know what it is like to carry a burden that is largely invisible to the outside world. The widespread pain that moves around your body, the crushing fatigue that sleep does nothing to relieve, the brain fog that makes you feel like you are thinking through cotton wool. You may look perfectly fine to others, which can make it all the more isolating when people do not understand how much you are struggling.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes widespread pain and tenderness throughout the body, along with extreme fatigue, sleep disturbance and cognitive difficulties often referred to as "fibro fog." It is thought to affect the way the brain and nervous system process pain signals, essentially amplifying the sensation of pain so that stimuli that would not normally be painful become so.

Fibromyalgia is more common than many people realise, and it affects significantly more women than men, though it can develop in anyone at any age. The condition often coexists with other issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, anxiety and depression.

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not fully understood, but it appears to involve a process called central sensitisation — where the central nervous system becomes hypersensitive to pain signals. This means that the pain you feel is very real, but the volume on your pain processing system has been turned up too high. Normal sensations that would pass unnoticed in someone without fibromyalgia are amplified into significant pain.

Various factors can trigger or contribute to fibromyalgia, including physical trauma, surgery, infections, significant psychological stress and accumulated emotional strain over time. In many cases, there is no single triggering event — symptoms develop gradually and build over time.

Understanding that fibromyalgia involves the way your brain and nervous system process information is key to understanding why hypnotherapy can help. If the central nervous system has become hypersensitive, then working directly with the subconscious mind to recalibrate that sensitivity is a logical and effective approach.

Living Well with Fibromyalgia

Beyond symptom management, an important part of working with fibromyalgia is learning to navigate daily life in a way that supports your wellbeing rather than undermining it. Many people with fibromyalgia fall into the boom-and-bust cycle — doing too much on good days and then being forced into extended rest on bad days. This pattern actually worsens the condition over time, as the nervous system never finds a stable baseline.

Through our work together, I help you develop a more sustainable approach to activity and rest. Hypnotherapy can help you tune into your body's genuine signals rather than being driven by the guilt of "I should be doing more" on good days or the despair of "I cannot do anything" on bad days. We work on building a compassionate relationship with your body — one based on listening and responding rather than pushing through or giving up.

The emotional impact of living with a chronic, invisible illness should never be underestimated. The frustration of not being believed or understood, the grief for the life you had before, the anxiety about the future, the guilt about letting others down — these emotional burdens can be as painful as the physical symptoms. EFT is particularly powerful for releasing these accumulated emotions, and many of my fibromyalgia clients find it one of the most valuable tools they take away from our work together.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Fibromyalgia

Hypnotherapy is particularly well suited to fibromyalgia because the condition is fundamentally about how the brain and nervous system process signals. Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious mind, where pain processing occurs, giving us a unique ability to influence the way your body experiences and responds to pain.

Here is how my combined approach helps:

  • Pain dial visualisation — imagining a dial or control panel in your mind that represents your pain level, and using hypnotic suggestion to gradually turn it down. This technique works because the brain processes both real and imagined sensations through overlapping neural pathways.
  • Glove anaesthesia — a technique where hypnotic suggestion creates a sensation of numbness in one hand, which can then be transferred to areas of pain elsewhere in the body.
  • Deep relaxation — the deep relaxation achieved during hypnosis directly counteracts the heightened nervous system activation that characterises fibromyalgia, giving your nervous system a much-needed opportunity to reset.
  • Sleep improvement — using hypnotic suggestion to promote deeper, more restorative sleep, which is crucial for fibromyalgia management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fibromyalgia is a complex, chronic condition and I would not claim to offer a cure. However, hypnotherapy can significantly reduce the intensity of pain, improve sleep quality, reduce fatigue and help you manage the emotional impact of living with the condition. Many clients experience a substantial improvement in their overall quality of life.

Pain is processed in the brain, and hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind to modify that processing. Through techniques such as pain dial visualisation, suggestion and deep relaxation, we can effectively reduce the intensity of pain signals. This is not about imagining the pain away — it is about recalibrating the nervous system's response.

Most clients see meaningful improvement within three to six sessions. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition, so some people choose to have occasional maintenance sessions over time. I will discuss what I think will work best for you after our initial consultation.

No. Hypnotherapy works alongside your existing medical treatment. You should always discuss any changes to medication with your GP or consultant. Many clients find that as their symptoms improve through hypnotherapy, they are able to discuss reducing their medication with their doctor.

Yes. Fatigue in fibromyalgia is closely linked to poor-quality sleep and an overactive nervous system. Hypnotherapy can improve sleep quality and calm the nervous system, both of which can lead to meaningful improvements in energy levels and mental clarity.

Many of my fibromyalgia clients come to me after trying numerous other approaches. Hypnotherapy works differently because it addresses the subconscious pain processing that drives the condition. Even if other approaches have not provided adequate relief, hypnotherapy may offer the improvement you are looking for.

Many of my clients have found EFT helpful for pain management. By tapping on specific meridian points while focusing on the pain, many people experience immediate reductions in pain intensity. I teach you EFT as a self-help tool you can use any time pain flares.

Many clients report improvements in cognitive clarity as their overall condition improves through hypnotherapy. Brain fog in fibromyalgia is closely linked to poor sleep quality, chronic pain and nervous system overactivation. As hypnotherapy addresses these underlying factors — promoting deeper sleep, reducing pain and calming the nervous system — mental clarity often improves as a welcome consequence.
