What Are Migraines?

Migraines are far more than just a bad headache. They are a complex neurological condition involving changes in brain activity, blood flow and nerve signalling. A migraine attack can last anywhere from a few hours to several days and can be completely debilitating.

The exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, but they are believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental and neurological factors. During a migraine, nerve pathways in the brain become overactive, triggering a cascade of chemical changes that lead to inflammation and pain. Blood vessels in and around the brain dilate, adding to the intense throbbing sensation.

Many migraines are preceded by warning signs. Some people experience an aura — visual disturbances such as flashing lights, blind spots or zigzag patterns — before the headache begins. Others notice subtle changes in mood, energy levels or appetite in the hours or days leading up to an attack. These prodromal symptoms can serve as early warning signals.

Migraine triggers vary enormously from person to person. Common triggers include stress, hormonal changes, certain foods and drinks, disrupted sleep patterns, dehydration, environmental factors such as bright lights or strong smells, and changes in weather or atmospheric pressure. For many people, it is a combination of triggers rather than a single factor that sets off an attack.

Tension headaches, while different from migraines, can also become chronic and significantly affect quality of life. These headaches typically produce a pressing or tightening sensation around the head and are often linked to muscle tension, stress and posture. Hypnotherapy can be effective for both migraines and tension headaches.

What is particularly relevant for hypnotherapy is the strong connection between stress, emotional state and migraine frequency. Stress is one of the most commonly reported migraine triggers, and the anxiety of anticipating the next attack can itself become a contributing factor — creating a cycle that feels impossible to break.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I do not just treat symptoms — I work with you to understand and address the root cause of what you are experiencing. My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.

My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. This means working with your subconscious mind, releasing stored emotional patterns, reframing unhelpful thinking, and giving you practical tools you can use between sessions and long after treatment ends.

I have been practising since 1994, giving me over 30 years of clinical experience. I hold a BA Hons degree along with professional qualifications including Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), ensuring the highest professional standards.

My practice is located at 40 Nursery Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5JQ, offering a calm, private and welcoming environment.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Migraines

The connection between the mind and migraines is well established. Stress, emotional tension and subconscious patterns all play significant roles in triggering and sustaining migraine cycles. Hypnotherapy addresses these factors directly, working at a level that conscious effort alone cannot reach.

Breaking the Stress-Migraine Cycle

Stress is the single most commonly reported migraine trigger. When you are stressed, your body produces cortisol and adrenaline, muscles tense, blood vessels constrict and your nervous system goes into a heightened state of alertness. All of these physiological changes can contribute to triggering a migraine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hypnotherapy does not claim to cure migraines, as they are a complex neurological condition. However, it can significantly reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of attacks by addressing contributing factors such as stress, tension and emotional triggers. Many clients experience a dramatic improvement in their quality of life.

Most clients benefit from three to six sessions, though some notice improvement after just one or two. The number of sessions depends on factors such as how long you have been experiencing migraines, the severity of your symptoms and how you respond to treatment.

Yes, hypnotherapy is entirely safe to use alongside any medication you may be taking. It is a complementary approach and does not interfere with pharmaceutical treatments. Always continue taking prescribed medication as directed by your doctor.

Hypnosis is a natural state of deep relaxation and focused attention. Most people describe it as feeling deeply calm and comfortable — similar to that pleasant drowsy state just before falling asleep, or being completely absorbed in a good book. You are not asleep and you remain in control throughout.

Absolutely. Tension headaches are often driven by stress, muscle tension and unconscious patterns of holding tension in the neck, shoulders and jaw. Hypnotherapy is highly effective for releasing these patterns and teaching the body to respond to stress without creating physical tension.

That is not a problem. Part of what hypnotherapy does is work with the subconscious mind to uncover triggers and patterns that you may not be consciously aware of. Many clients discover connections they had never considered, which opens up new avenues for managing their condition.

Yes, I offer sessions both in-person at my Wilmslow clinic and online. Online sessions are fully effective for migraine treatment, as the hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP techniques work just as well via video call.
