You might have tried bitter-tasting nail polishes, keeping your hands busy, wearing gloves, or simply relying on willpower. And yet, before you even realise you are doing it, your fingers are at your mouth again. The frustration is real — and so is the embarrassment when you look down at your damaged nails and sore skin.
What clients say

What Is Nail Biting?
Nail biting, known clinically as onychophagia, is a repetitive body-focused behaviour in which a person compulsively bites, chews or tears at their fingernails. Nail picking — where the nails or surrounding skin are picked, pulled or peeled — is a closely related behaviour. Both habits can range from mild and occasional to severe and constant.

For many people, nail biting begins in childhood. It is one of the most common habits among children and teenagers, and while many outgrow it, a significant number carry the habit into adulthood. By that point, it has typically become deeply embedded in the subconscious — an automatic response that happens without conscious thought.
The habit usually serves a purpose at a subconscious level. It may be a way of self-soothing during times of stress or anxiety. It may be triggered by boredom, concentration or understimulation. For some people, it is linked to perfectionism — an urge to smooth or neaten the nails that escalates into compulsive biting or picking. In many cases, there are multiple triggers operating simultaneously.
What makes nail biting particularly frustrating is its automatic nature. Most nail biters report that they often do not realise they are doing it until they have already been biting for some time. This is because the behaviour is governed by the subconscious mind — the same part of the mind that controls other automatic behaviours like breathing, blinking or reaching for the light switch when you walk into a dark room.
The physical consequences can be significant. Chronic nail biting can lead to damaged nail beds, infection, dental problems, soreness around the cuticles and misshapen nails. The psychological impact is equally real — many nail biters feel deep shame and embarrassment about the appearance of their hands, hiding them in public or avoiding situations where their nails might be noticed.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?

My background includes a qualification in Counselling alongside my clinical hypnotherapy training, which means I bring a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to health conditions. This integrated perspective shapes everything I do.
My approach combines four powerful therapeutic techniques — Hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP and CBT — so that we can address your condition from multiple angles. How Hypnotherapy Can Help You Stop Nail Biting
Because nail biting is a subconscious behaviour, it responds remarkably well to hypnotherapy — a treatment that works directly with the subconscious mind. My combined approach uses Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to address the habit from multiple angles.
Reprogramming the Subconscious Response
During hypnosis, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to change. In this state, we can work on breaking the automatic link between your triggers (stress, boredom, anxiety) and the biting response. We replace the old pattern with a new, healthier response — so that when you encounter a trigger, your subconscious mind directs you towards a different behaviour instead.
- Understand the root causes of your nail biting
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
Many clients notice a significant reduction in nail biting after just one or two sessions. However, most people benefit from three to six sessions to fully break the habit and consolidate the change. The exact number depends on how deeply ingrained the habit is and what emotional factors may be involved.
The goal of hypnotherapy is not to rely on willpower to resist the urge — it is to remove the urge itself. By reprogramming your subconscious responses, the compulsion to bite diminishes naturally. Many clients report that they simply stop thinking about biting their nails.
The length of time you have been biting does not determine how well you will respond to hypnotherapy. I have helped clients who have been biting for 30, 40 or even 50 years break the habit successfully. What matters is your willingness to change, not how long the habit has been present.
Yes. I work with children from age six upwards, and children often respond extremely well to hypnotherapy and EFT. Children's sessions are adapted to be age-appropriate and engaging, and I may record sessions for them to listen to at home.
In many cases, yes. Nail biting is frequently linked to anxiety, stress or emotional tension. Part of the treatment involves addressing these underlying emotional states, which not only helps stop the biting but often leads to broader improvements in wellbeing.
Nail picking and skin picking around the nails respond to the same treatment approach as nail biting. They are driven by similar subconscious patterns and emotional triggers. We address all related behaviours as part of your treatment.
