Hypnotherapy for Fear of the Dark in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Nyctophobia
A fear of the dark is often dismissed as something children grow out of. But for many adults, nyctophobia is a persistent, distressing reality that affects sleep, independence and daily life. If you dread the moment the lights go off, if you cannot walk into a dark room without your heart pounding, or if winter evenings fill you with anxiety, you are not being childish — you are experiencing a genuine phobia that deserves understanding and effective treatment.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Nyctophobia?
Nyctophobia — derived from the Greek words for night and fear — is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of the dark or of nighttime. While mild nervousness in dark environments is common and evolutionarily natural, nyctophobia involves a disproportionate fear response that goes well beyond ordinary caution. It can cause significant distress and avoidance behaviours that affect your quality of life.

Like all phobias, nyctophobia is a learned response. We are not born afraid of the dark. As young children, we are curious about the world around us, and darkness is simply the absence of light. The fear develops through experience or observation. Perhaps something frightening happened to you in the dark as a child — a nightmare that felt terrifyingly real, a power cut that caused panic in the household, or a scary story told at bedtime. Perhaps you observed a parent or sibling expressing fear of the dark, and your subconscious mind absorbed the message that darkness is dangerous.
For many nyctophobia sufferers, the fear is not really about the dark itself — it is about what the dark might conceal. The imagination fills the darkness with threats, and the subconscious mind responds as though those imagined threats are real. The fear of the fear also plays a significant role. You dread bedtime or dark evenings not because of a specific danger, but because you know the anxiety will come — the racing thoughts, the hypervigilance, the inability to relax.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of the Dark
If you have been living with nyctophobia, you may have tried various coping strategies — sleeping with lights on, avoiding certain situations, keeping yourself busy to delay bedtime. These approaches manage the symptoms but do not address the root cause. It is important to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to sit in a dark room or go outside at night. My approach is gentle, comfortable and works with your subconscious mind.
Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious — where your fear of the dark is stored and maintained. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes receptive to positive change. In this calm state, it becomes possible to change the way your mind responds to darkness, helping you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of the dark
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
Nyctophobia is more common in adults than many people realise. Because it is often associated with childhood, many adults feel embarrassed and keep their fear private. This can mean living with the phobia for years without seeking help.
That is perfectly normal. Many people cannot identify a specific event that triggered their fear. Hypnotherapy and EFT can work with the fear response directly, even when the original cause has been forgotten or was never consciously recognised.
Many nyctophobia clients report significant improvements in their sleep after treatment. By reducing the anxiety associated with darkness and nighttime, the barriers to restful sleep are removed.
Most phobia clients experience significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation.
Yes. Fear of the dark can be connected to other anxieties such as fear of being alone, fear of death, or generalised anxiety. My integrated approach can address these overlapping fears as part of your treatment.
