Hypnotherapy for Snoring in Wilmslow
Snoring is often treated as a joke — something to laugh about or nudge your partner over in the night. But if you are the one snoring, or the one lying awake listening to it, you know there is nothing funny about it. Snoring disrupts sleep for both the snorer and their bed partner, leading to daytime fatigue, irritability and strained relationships. Separate bedrooms, arguments about who keeps whom awake, resentment building on both sides — the impact on relationships can be significant and painful.

What Causes Snoring?
Snoring occurs when air cannot flow freely through the nose and throat during sleep. As you breathe, the relaxed tissues in the throat vibrate, producing the familiar snoring sound. The narrower the airway, the more forceful the airflow, and the louder the snoring.

Several factors contribute to snoring, and understanding them is key to addressing the problem effectively:
Muscle tone in the throat and tongue. During sleep, the muscles in the throat and tongue relax. If they relax too much, they can partially collapse and obstruct the airway. This is one of the most common causes of snoring, and it is an area where hypnotherapy can be particularly effective — by working with the subconscious mind to encourage the throat muscles to maintain appropriate tone during sleep.
Sleeping position. Sleeping on your back allows gravity to pull the tongue and soft tissues backwards, narrowing the airway. Many people who snore only do so when lying on their back and are quiet when sleeping on their side.
Weight. Excess weight, particularly around the neck and throat, can increase pressure on the airway and contribute to snoring. Even a modest weight gain can make snoring worse.
Nasal congestion. Blocked or narrow nasal passages — whether from allergies, a cold, or structural issues — force you to breathe through your mouth, which increases the likelihood of snoring.
Alcohol and sedatives. Alcohol and certain medications relax the throat muscles more than normal, which is why snoring is often worse after drinking.
Stress and tension. Stress affects breathing patterns and muscle tension, both of which can contribute to snoring. Shallow, chest-based breathing and tension held in the jaw, neck and throat can all worsen the problem.
Smoking. Smoking irritates and inflames the membranes in the nose and throat, narrowing the airway and contributing to snoring.
It is worth noting that persistent, loud snoring — particularly when accompanied by pauses in breathing, gasping or choking sounds — may indicate obstructive sleep apnoea, a more serious condition that requires medical assessment. If you suspect sleep apnoea, please consult your GP.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Snoring
Hypnotherapy approaches snoring from a different angle than the sprays, strips and gadgets you may have already tried. Rather than treating the symptom externally, it works with the subconscious mind to address the internal factors that contribute to snoring.
Improving Throat Muscle Tone
One of the primary mechanisms of snoring is excessive relaxation of the throat muscles during sleep. Through hypnotherapy, we can communicate with the subconscious mind to encourage appropriate muscle tone in the throat and soft palate during sleep. This is done through targeted suggestion while you are in a deeply relaxed hypnotic state — your subconscious mind receives and acts on these instructions during subsequent sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hypnotherapy can significantly reduce snoring by addressing the factors that cause it — including throat muscle tone, sleeping position, breathing patterns and stress. Results vary from person to person, but many clients report substantial improvement. It is worth noting that if snoring is caused primarily by a structural issue such as a deviated septum, medical intervention may also be needed.
Most clients benefit from three to six sessions. Some people notice an improvement after just one or two sessions. During your initial consultation, I will give you an honest assessment of what to expect based on your individual situation.
In many cases, yes — and often before you notice it yourself. Your partner is typically the best judge of whether your snoring has reduced, as they are the one being affected by it. I welcome feedback from partners as treatment progresses.
Simple snoring, while disruptive, is not usually dangerous. However, if your snoring is accompanied by pauses in breathing, gasping or choking sounds, or if you experience excessive daytime sleepiness, you should consult your GP to rule out obstructive sleep apnoea, which is a more serious condition.
Yes. I can address both the snoring directly and support your weight management as part of the treatment. My hypnotherapy approach to weight loss targets the subconscious patterns that drive overeating and unhealthy food choices, helping you lose weight in a sustainable way — which in turn reduces snoring.
If alcohol consumption is a contributing factor, we can address this as part of your treatment. Hypnotherapy can help you reduce your alcohol intake or change your drinking patterns without feeling deprived.
Yes, I offer both in-person and online sessions. Online treatment is fully effective for snoring, as the hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind regardless of whether you are in the room or connecting via video.
