Hypnotherapy for Fear of Being Alone in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Autophobia
For most people, spending time alone is a normal part of life — perhaps even something they look forward to. But if you experience autophobia, solitude feels anything but peaceful. The prospect of being on your own — even for a short time — can trigger intense anxiety, panic and a desperate need to be around other people. This fear can quietly take control of your relationships, your independence and your sense of self.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Autophobia?
Autophobia — sometimes called monophobia or isolophobia — is an intense, persistent fear of being alone or of being isolated. It goes far beyond simply preferring company. People with autophobia may experience genuine terror at the thought of being left on their own, even in familiar, safe environments such as their own home.

Like all phobias, autophobia is a learned response. We are not born with a fear of being alone — as children, we naturally develop increasing independence as we grow. The fear typically develops through experiences or observations: perhaps you were left alone as a child in circumstances that felt frightening, or you experienced a loss or abandonment that left a deep emotional imprint. Sometimes the trigger has been forgotten entirely, buried in the subconscious, but the fear response continues to operate as though the original threat is still present.
A significant feature of autophobia is the fear of the fear itself. You may dread being alone not because of any specific danger, but because you know the panic will come — the racing heart, the spiralling thoughts, the overwhelming need to call someone or leave the house. This anticipatory anxiety creates a cycle that reinforces the phobia with each repetition.
Autophobia can also become entangled with other anxieties, such as fear of having a medical emergency with nobody there to help, fear of intruders, or a more generalised sense that something terrible will happen if you are not with another person.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Being Alone
If you have been living with autophobia, you may feel trapped — unable to be alone yet aware that your dependence on others is unsustainable. It is important to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to sit alone in a room to "face your fear." The approach is gentle, supportive and works with your mind rather than against it.
Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious mind — where your fear response is stored and maintained. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes open to positive suggestions. In this calm, receptive state, it is possible to change the patterns that trigger your fear, helping you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of being alone
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience
