Hypnotherapy for Fear of Open Spaces in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia can make the outside world feel like a genuinely dangerous place. It is not simply a preference for being indoors — it is an intense, overwhelming fear that can leave you feeling trapped in your own home, unable to do the things that others take for granted. Going to the shops, walking across a car park, attending a social event, or even stepping out of your front door can feel impossible.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is a complex anxiety condition characterised by an intense fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help might not be available if panic strikes. While it is commonly associated with a fear of open spaces, it can actually encompass a range of situations, including crowded places, public transport, queues, and being away from home.

The common thread is a fear of being in a situation where you might experience overwhelming anxiety and be unable to get to safety. This is why agoraphobia often develops after one or more panic attacks — the experience of panic is so frightening that you begin to fear and avoid any situation where it might happen again.
It is important to understand that agoraphobia involves learned responses. We are not born with an inherent fear of open spaces or public places. Your subconscious mind has learned to associate certain environments with danger — specifically, the danger of experiencing panic. This association may have been triggered by a panic attack in a public place, by a period of high stress or anxiety, or by gradually increasing avoidance of situations that feel uncomfortable.
The fear can become self-reinforcing in a particularly cruel way. Each time you avoid a situation, you feel temporary relief — but the avoidance confirms to your subconscious that the situation really was dangerous. And each time you do venture out and experience anxiety, the association is strengthened. Over time, the range of situations that feel threatening can expand, and the safe zone can shrink further and further.
Because the fear operates at the subconscious level, it cannot be overcome simply through rational thought or willpower. You may know perfectly well that the supermarket is not dangerous, but your subconscious overrides that knowledge with a flood of anxiety. Hypnotherapy works at exactly this level, making it particularly well suited to treating agoraphobia.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Agoraphobia
As a clinical hypnotherapist with over 30 years of experience, I take a gentle, thorough approach to treating agoraphobia. My method combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), creating an integrated treatment that addresses the condition from multiple angles.
I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to go to places that frighten you or to push yourself into situations that cause distress. My approach works entirely within the safe, comfortable environment of my practice in Wilmslow — and I understand that for some clients, even getting to the practice can be a significant step, which I always acknowledge and support.

Agoraphobia is more than general anxiety about going out — it is a specific pattern of fear connected to situations where panic might occur and escape might be difficult. It can be highly debilitating and significantly restrict your daily life. If your avoidance of open spaces, crowds, or public places is affecting your quality of life, it is worth seeking help.
Yes. Regardless of how long you have had agoraphobia or how much your world has shrunk, hypnotherapy can work with your subconscious mind to create new, positive responses. Your mind's ability to learn and change does not diminish with time.
