Hypnotherapy for Fear of Buttons in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Koumpounophobia
If the thought of touching a button — or even seeing one — makes your skin crawl, you are not alone and you are certainly not imagining it. A fear of buttons, known as koumpounophobia, is more common than most people realise. It is also one of the most misunderstood phobias, often met with disbelief or amusement by those who do not experience it. But for you, it is anything but funny. It can affect the clothes you wear, the furniture you sit on, the shops you visit and the social situations you feel comfortable in.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Koumpounophobia?
Koumpounophobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear or aversion to buttons. The phobia can involve any type of button — clothing buttons, upholstery buttons, decorative buttons — and can range from a strong aversion and disgust to genuine panic. Some people are most affected by touching buttons, while others find even the sight of loose buttons deeply distressing.

Like all phobias, koumpounophobia is a learned response. We are not born with a dislike of buttons. The fear typically develops in early childhood, often through a sensory experience that created a strong negative association. Perhaps you choked on a button as a toddler, or the texture of buttons felt intensely unpleasant to you as a young child. You may have picked up the response from a family member who showed visible disgust around buttons. In many cases, the original trigger has been forgotten, but the response remains firmly programmed into the subconscious mind.
For many people with this phobia, the fear of the fear plays a significant role. You may dread situations where you might have to touch buttons — shopping for clothes, visiting someone's home with buttoned cushions, or sitting next to someone wearing a heavily buttoned garment. This anticipatory anxiety adds an additional layer of distress.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Buttons
If you have been living with koumpounophobia, you may never have told anyone about it — or if you have, you may have been met with laughter or disbelief. It is important to know that your fear will be treated at my practice with complete seriousness and respect. It is also important to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to handle buttons or have them placed in front of you. The treatment is gentle and works entirely within your comfort zone.
Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind — the part of your brain that stores the automatic disgust or fear response to buttons. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes open to positive change. In this calm, receptive state, it is possible to change the way your mind responds to buttons, helping you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of buttons
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. While it may not be as widely discussed as fears of spiders or flying, koumpounophobia is a genuine phobia that causes real distress. Any stimulus that triggers an irrational, disproportionate fear response is a legitimate phobia, and it deserves proper treatment.
Like all phobias, it is a learned response. Common origins include a choking incident involving a button in early childhood, an unpleasant sensory experience with the texture of buttons, or absorbing a disgust response from a family member. Often the original cause has been forgotten.
No. I do not use exposure therapy. The treatment works through relaxation, positive suggestion and emotional release techniques. You will feel comfortable and safe throughout your sessions.
Most phobia clients find significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation.
Yes. Koumpounophobia responds well to the combination of hypnotherapy and EFT. Because the fear is a learned response stored in the subconscious mind, it can be changed at that same subconscious level — often more quickly than people expect.
