What Is White Coat Syndrome?

White coat syndrome is a widely used term that originally referred to elevated blood pressure readings in medical settings due to anxiety. However, for many people, the fear goes far deeper than a temporary spike in blood pressure. Iatrophobia — the clinical term for fear of doctors — is an intense, irrational fear of medical professionals and medical settings that can lead to significant avoidance of healthcare.

Like all phobias, this fear is a learned response. We are not born afraid of doctors. The fear typically develops through experience or observation. Perhaps a childhood visit to the GP or hospital was painful, frightening or handled insensitively. Perhaps you witnessed a family member's distress in a medical setting. Perhaps a diagnosis or medical procedure went wrong, or you experienced a loss of control during treatment. Sometimes the triggering event has been forgotten, but the subconscious mind continues to associate doctors and medical settings with danger.

The fear of the fear is a powerful factor for many sufferers. You may avoid making an appointment not because you believe the doctor will harm you, but because you dread the anxiety response — the racing heart, the sweating palms, the overwhelming urge to leave. Some people also fear what the doctor might find, adding an additional layer of avoidance.

Why Choose Karen Ashley?

I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.

My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.

I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Doctors

If you have been avoiding medical care because of your phobia, you may feel caught in a difficult position — knowing you should see a doctor but unable to manage the anxiety. It is important to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be taken to a medical setting or asked to sit in a doctor's waiting room. The treatment takes place in the calm, comfortable environment of my Wilmslow practice.

Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind, where your fear response to doctors and medical settings is stored. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes receptive to positive suggestions. In this calm state, it becomes possible to change the way your mind responds to medical appointments, helping you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.

  • Understand the root causes of your fear of doctors
  • Retrain your subconscious responses
  • Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
  • Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions

White coat syndrome typically refers to elevated blood pressure in medical settings, which may occur without significant anxiety. Iatrophobia is a deeper fear that causes significant distress, avoidance of medical care and physical symptoms of anxiety. Hypnotherapy can help with both.

Yes. The techniques I use can address fear responses to any medical setting — GP surgeries, hospitals, clinics, dental practices. I will tailor the treatment to your specific triggers.

There is absolutely no judgement. Many of My clients have avoided medical care for extended periods. The focus is entirely on helping you move forward, not on what has happened in the past.

Most phobia clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation.

Yes. Because phobias can often be resolved in fewer sessions, it is often possible to make meaningful progress before a scheduled appointment. Contact me as soon as possible to discuss your timeline.
