Hypnotherapy for Fear of Blood in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Haemophobia
A fear of blood — known clinically as haemophobia — can affect your life in ways that go far beyond simply feeling squeamish. If you experience this phobia, the sight of blood, or even the thought of it, can trigger intense anxiety, dizziness, nausea or fainting. You may avoid blood tests, medical appointments, dental procedures and even first aid situations. In some cases, the fear can prevent you from pursuing careers in healthcare or from being present when a loved one needs support.
What clients say

What Is Haemophobia?
Haemophobia — also spelled hemophobia — is an intense, irrational fear of blood. It belongs to a group known as blood-injection-injury phobias, which also includes fears of needles and medical procedures. What makes haemophobia particularly distinctive is that it is one of the few phobias that can cause fainting, due to a sudden drop in blood pressure known as a vasovagal response.

Like all phobias, the fear of blood is a learned response. We are not born afraid of blood — young children often show remarkable indifference to minor cuts and scrapes. The fear develops through experience or observation. Perhaps you fainted during a blood test as a teenager and the experience was frightening. Perhaps you saw a family member react with visible distress at the sight of blood. Perhaps a childhood accident — your own or someone else's — created a powerful emotional association that your subconscious mind has held on to ever since.
For many haemophobia sufferers, the fear of the fear becomes the dominant concern. You know that seeing blood will trigger a powerful physical response — dizziness, nausea, possibly fainting — and the dread of that response can be enough to make you avoid any situation where blood might be involved.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Blood
Living with haemophobia can feel isolating, especially when others dismiss it as mere squeamishness. It is important to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be shown images of blood or asked to watch medical procedures. My approach is gentle, comfortable and works with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront the object of your fear.
Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind — the part of your brain that stores and triggers your fear response. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes receptive to positive change. In this calm, focused state, it becomes possible to change the automatic response your mind has to blood, helping you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of blood
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
The fainting response in haemophobia is caused by a vasovagal reaction — a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure. It is an unusual phobia response because most phobias increase heart rate, whereas haemophobia initially increases it before causing a dramatic drop. Hypnotherapy can help to regulate this response by changing the way your subconscious reacts to blood.
No. Squeamishness is a mild discomfort that most people can manage. Haemophobia is a disproportionate fear response that can cause fainting, avoidance of medical care and significant disruption to daily life. It is a recognised phobia that deserves proper treatment.
Absolutely. Many clients seek treatment specifically because they have an upcoming medical procedure and want to be able to manage it calmly. Because phobias can often be resolved in fewer sessions, it is frequently possible to make meaningful progress before a scheduled appointment.
Many phobia clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will discuss the likely number during your initial consultation.
Yes, completely. You are aware of everything that is happening and remain in control throughout. Hypnotherapy is nothing like anaesthesia — it is a state of focused, pleasant relaxation.
