Hypnotherapy for Fear of Eating in Public in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Deipnophobia
Eating is one of the most social activities there is — restaurant meals, work lunches, family celebrations, coffee dates, dinner parties. For most people, these are enjoyable occasions. But if you experience a fear of eating in public, they can be a source of intense anxiety and dread. You may worry about being watched while you eat, fear choking or feeling nauseous, or dread the thought of having a panic attack at the table. The result is often a pattern of avoidance that can isolate you from friends, colleagues and family, and make you feel as though a fundamental part of social life is closed off to you.
What clients say

What Is Fear of Eating in Public?
A fear of eating in public — sometimes called deipnophobia or considered a form of social phobia — is an intense anxiety around eating or drinking in front of other people. It is not about fussy eating or simply preferring to eat at home. It is a powerful fear response that can make shared meals feel impossible.

Like all phobias, this is a learned response. We are not born afraid of eating with others — as children, we naturally eat in the company of family and friends without self-consciousness. The fear develops through experience or observation. Perhaps you choked or felt sick at a meal and the embarrassment was deeply distressing. Perhaps you experienced a panic attack in a restaurant and now associate eating out with loss of control. Perhaps you grew up in an environment where table manners were scrutinised harshly, creating a lasting association between eating and judgement.
For many people, this phobia is sustained by the fear of the fear. You dread eating in public not because anything specific will happen, but because you know the anxiety will come — the tightness in your throat, the nausea, the racing thoughts about whether people are watching you, the conviction that you will embarrass yourself. This anticipatory anxiety can cause you to decline invitations weeks in advance.
The fear can also be connected to other concerns: fear of vomiting (emetophobia), fear of choking, general social anxiety, or issues around body image and eating.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Eating in Public
If you have been avoiding social meals, you may feel increasingly isolated and frustrated. The good news is that this fear responds well to treatment, and we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to eat in front of anyone or visit a restaurant as part of your sessions. My approach is gentle, private and works with your subconscious mind.
Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious — where your anxiety response to public eating is stored. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes receptive to positive change. In this calm, focused state, it becomes possible to change the way your mind responds to eating with others, helping you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of eating in public
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use

Frequently Asked Questions
No, although there can be some overlap. A fear of eating in public is specifically about anxiety around being seen eating by others. It is not primarily about weight, food intake or body image — though these concerns can sometimes coexist. I will take the time to understand your specific situation during your initial consultation.
This is very common. Many people who fear eating in public also have elements of emetophobia — a fear of being sick. My integrated approach can address both the social anxiety and the underlying fear of vomiting. You may also wish to read the fear of vomiting page.
Yes, significantly. Work lunches, client dinners, team meals and conference networking all involve eating with others. Avoiding these situations can affect professional relationships and career progression. Treating the phobia can open up these opportunities.
Many phobia clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation.
The goal is to reduce your anxiety to a manageable level so that you can eat comfortably in social settings without the overwhelming fear response. Most clients find that after treatment, eating out becomes an enjoyable experience again.
