Hypnotherapy for Fear of Vomiting in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Emetophobia
Emetophobia — the fear of vomiting — is one of the most common yet least talked about phobias. If you live with this fear, you will know how all-consuming it can be. It is not simply a dislike of being sick; it is a relentless, controlling anxiety that can affect what you eat, where you go, who you spend time with and how you live your life. The constant vigilance, the avoidance behaviours, the checking and reassurance-seeking — it can feel utterly exhausting.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Emetophobia?
Emetophobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of vomiting. This can include a fear of being sick yourself, seeing others vomit, hearing someone being sick, or even the thought of it happening. It is far more prevalent than many people realise, and it can be profoundly debilitating.

Like all phobias, emetophobia is a learned response. We are not born afraid of vomiting — it is a natural bodily function. The fear typically develops through a distressing experience, often in childhood: a particularly unpleasant bout of vomiting, a norovirus at school, or witnessing a family member being violently ill. Sometimes the original event has been forgotten, but the emotional imprint remains locked in the subconscious mind.
For many emetophobia sufferers, the fear of the fear is as powerful as the phobia itself. You may spend enormous amounts of energy trying to prevent any situation that could possibly lead to vomiting — avoiding certain foods, refusing to eat out, steering clear of anyone who seems unwell, obsessively checking use-by dates, or refusing to travel. This hypervigilance is exhausting and can shrink your world to a fraction of what it could be.
Emetophobia can also overlap with other difficulties, including eating problems, social avoidance, health anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behaviours. It is a phobia that reaches into every corner of daily life.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Vomiting
If you have been struggling with emetophobia, you may have found it difficult to even talk about your fear, let alone seek treatment. It is important to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to watch videos of people being sick or deliberately make yourself feel nauseous. The treatment is gentle, comfortable and entirely respectful of your boundaries.
Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind, where the emetophobic response is stored. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes receptive to positive suggestions. In this calm state, it becomes possible to change the way your mind responds to the thought and experience of vomiting, helping you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of vomiting
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Yes, emetophobia is one of the most common specific phobias, though it is often underreported because people find it embarrassing to discuss. It affects both men and women and can begin at any age, though it often starts in childhood.
Yes. Many people with emetophobia restrict their diet significantly, avoiding foods they associate with past nausea or illness. This can lead to nutritional issues and significant weight loss in some cases. Treating the underlying phobia can help to restore a healthy relationship with food.
I am sensitive to the fact that even discussing vomiting can be distressing for emetophobia sufferers. I will work at your pace and within your comfort zone. The beauty of hypnotherapy and EFT is that it is possible to release the fear without dwelling on distressing details.
Many phobia clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. Emetophobia can sometimes require a few additional sessions, particularly if the avoidance behaviours are deeply established. I will discuss this honestly with you at your initial consultation.
