Hypnotherapy for Fear of Death in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Thanatophobia
A certain awareness of mortality is part of being human. But when the thought of death triggers overwhelming anxiety, panic or an inability to function, it has crossed the line from natural awareness into a phobia that deserves proper attention. Thanatophobia can consume your waking hours, disrupt your sleep, and cast a shadow over moments that should be joyful. You may find yourself unable to stop thinking about death — your own, or the deaths of people you love — and the anxiety can feel inescapable.
What clients say

What Is Thanatophobia?
Thanatophobia — from the Greek word Thanatos, meaning death — is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of death or the process of dying. While it is perfectly normal to feel some apprehension about mortality, thanatophobia involves a persistent, disproportionate fear that interferes with daily life. It is not just a passing worry — it is a preoccupation that can dominate your thoughts and behaviour.

Like all phobias, thanatophobia is a learned response. We are not born with a fear of death — young children generally have no concept of mortality. The fear develops through experience, observation and cultural messaging. Perhaps you lost someone close to you at a young age and the experience left a lasting emotional impact. Perhaps a health scare — your own or a loved one's — triggered an awareness of mortality that became impossible to switch off. Perhaps you grew up in an environment where death was discussed with great fear or never discussed at all, leaving it shrouded in mystery and dread.
The fear of the fear is a significant factor in thanatophobia. You may dread the moments when death-related thoughts intrude — lying in bed at night, hearing about an illness, attending a funeral — because you know the spiral of anxiety that will follow. This anticipatory dread can cause you to avoid conversations, situations and even relationships that might remind you of mortality.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Death
Thanatophobia is not resolved by rational argument. You cannot simply reason yourself out of the fear, no matter how many times you remind yourself that death is natural and inevitable. The fear operates at the subconscious level, and that is where it needs to be addressed.
It is important to know that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to confront death in any way that feels distressing. My approach is gentle, compassionate and works with your subconscious mind to change the fear response at its root.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of death
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Thanatophobia is a recognised specific phobia that can cause significant distress and impairment in daily functioning. It is distinct from the normal, occasional awareness of mortality that most people experience.
This is very common and is still considered part of thanatophobia. Fear about the death of loved ones — particularly partners, children or parents — can be just as debilitating as fear about your own death. Hypnotherapy can address both aspects.
Yes, very closely. Many people with thanatophobia develop health anxiety — constantly monitoring their body for symptoms and seeking reassurance that they are not ill. By addressing the underlying fear of death, hypnotherapy can help to reduce health anxiety as well.
Some clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions, while others benefit from a slightly longer course of treatment. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation.
No. Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique, not a spiritual practice. I work with your individual beliefs and framework — the aim is to reduce the anxiety response, not to change your views about what happens after death.
