Hypnotherapy for Fear of Water in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Aquaphobia
A fear of water can affect your life in ways that go far beyond simply not being able to swim. It can mean dreading family trips to the beach, avoiding pool parties, feeling panic on a boat, or being unable to enjoy a holiday near the sea. For some people, the fear extends to baths, showers, or even seeing large bodies of water from a distance. What should be relaxing, enjoyable, or simply routine becomes a source of genuine anxiety and distress.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Aquaphobia?
Aquaphobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of water. It is a specific phobia that can range from anxiety about deep water to a fear of any body of water, and in severe cases, even a fear of water touching the face or body. It is distinct from a healthy caution around water — aquaphobia involves a level of fear that is disproportionate to the actual danger and significantly affects a person's quality of life.

The phobia can focus on different aspects of water for different people. Some fear the depth — the idea of water being beneath them with no solid ground. Others fear submersion, the sensation of being unable to breathe. For some, it is the power of water — waves, currents, and the feeling of being overwhelmed by a force they cannot control. Open water, where the bottom is not visible, is a common trigger, as is any situation where the water is deeper than standing depth.
It is important to understand that aquaphobia is a learned response. We are not born with an inherent fear of water. Your subconscious mind has, at some point, created an association between water and danger. This often stems from a frightening childhood experience in or near water — being dunked, caught by a wave, or having water forced over your head. It can develop from witnessing someone else's fear or distress around water, or from hearing stories about drowning. In some cases, the phobia develops without a clear triggering event.
The key understanding is that because the fear was learned by your subconscious mind, it can be changed. Through hypnotherapy, we can work with your subconscious to replace the fear response with a calm, proportionate relationship with water.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Fear of Water
As a clinical hypnotherapist with over 30 years of experience, I use a gentle, integrated approach to help clients overcome aquaphobia. My method combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), addressing the fear at its source.
I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to go near water, get into a pool, or confront your fear in any way that causes distress. All of the work takes place in the dry, safe, comfortable environment of my practice in Wilmslow.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. I do not use exposure therapy. All the work is done through hypnotherapy, EFT, and NLP in my completely dry, comfortable practice. You will not encounter water in any way during your sessions.
While hypnotherapy does not teach swimming skills, it can remove the fear barrier that prevents you from learning. Many clients find that once the phobic response is resolved, they are able to take swimming lessons with a calm confidence that would not have been possible before.
Most clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. If your aquaphobia has multiple aspects — for example, fear of deep water, fear of water on the face, and fear of being on boats — you may benefit from a few sessions to address each dimension.
Hypnotherapy and EFT are both excellent at resolving trauma-related fears. We can work gently with the underlying experience without you needing to relive it in distressing detail. Your comfort and wellbeing are always the priority.
Yes. Aquaphobia can develop at any age, sometimes after a frightening experience in water, and sometimes without any obvious trigger. Having previously been comfortable around water does not prevent the phobia from developing, and it does not prevent it from being successfully treated.
