Hypnotherapy for Fear of Anaesthesia in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Anaesthesia Phobia
If the thought of being put under anaesthetic fills you with dread, you are far from alone. Many people avoid necessary medical procedures — sometimes for years — because the prospect of going under a general or even local anaesthetic triggers overwhelming anxiety. You may worry about losing control, not waking up, or experiencing awareness during surgery. These fears are entirely valid, and they deserve to be taken seriously.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Anaesthesia Phobia?
Anaesthesia phobia — sometimes referred to as anaesthesiophobia — is an intense, irrational fear of anaesthetics or the process of being anaesthetised. While it is perfectly normal to feel some apprehension before a medical procedure, a true phobia goes far beyond ordinary nervousness. It can lead to the avoidance of essential surgery, dental work and medical investigations, potentially putting your health at serious risk.

Like all phobias, the fear of anaesthesia is a learned response. We are not born afraid of medical procedures — these fears develop through our experiences and observations. Perhaps you had a difficult experience with anaesthesia in the past, or you witnessed a family member reacting badly. You may have heard a frightening story from a friend or seen something unsettling in the media. Sometimes the original trigger has been long forgotten, buried deep in the subconscious mind, yet the fear response remains as powerful as ever.
For many people, it is not even the anaesthesia itself that causes the greatest distress — it is the fear of the fear. The anticipation of panic, the dread of losing control, the worry about what might happen. This anticipatory anxiety can be just as debilitating as the phobia itself, creating a cycle that feels impossible to break.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Anaesthesia
One of the most important things to understand about hypnotherapy for phobias is that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to confront your fear head-on or push through your anxiety. Instead, the approach is gentle, comfortable and deeply relaxing.
Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind — the part of your mind where your fear response is stored. During a session, you are guided into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes receptive to positive suggestions. In this calm, focused state, it becomes possible to change the way your mind responds to the thought of anaesthesia, allowing you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of anaesthesia
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
No, absolutely not. Hypnotherapy is nothing like being under anaesthesia. You remain fully aware throughout the session and are always in control. It is more like a state of deep, focused relaxation — similar to being absorbed in a good book or a daydream. You can open your eyes and stop at any time.
Phobias often respond very well to hypnotherapy, and many clients experience significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation based on your individual circumstances.
Yes. Because phobias can often be resolved in fewer sessions than other conditions, it is often possible to make meaningful progress even with a procedure approaching. Contact me as soon as possible to discuss your timeline.
I am experienced in working with fear responses that stem from past experiences, even those that may have been partially or fully forgotten. The combination of hypnotherapy and EFT is particularly effective for releasing the emotional impact of traumatic memories without the need to relive them in detail.
Hypnotherapy is a well-established, safe therapeutic practice. I am registered with three professional bodies — the NCH, NGH and GHR — all of which require adherence to strict codes of ethics and practice.
