Hypnotherapy for Fear of Injections in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Trypanophobia
A fear of injections can feel deeply isolating. While most people are not exactly keen on needles, for someone with a genuine phobia, the experience goes far beyond mild discomfort. The thought of receiving an injection can trigger intense panic — the kind of anxiety that makes you postpone vaccinations, avoid blood tests, and even refuse medical treatments that could be important for your health.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Trypanophobia?
Trypanophobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of injections and the medical procedures that involve them. It is distinct from a general dislike of needles — trypanophobia involves a level of fear that significantly interferes with a person's ability to receive necessary medical care.

The phobia can encompass several different aspects of the injection experience. Some people fear the sensation of the needle — the anticipation of pain or the piercing of the skin. Others are more afraid of the loss of control, the vulnerability of having something done to their body. For some, the sight of syringes and needles is the primary trigger, while others react most strongly to the clinical environment in which injections typically take place.
It is important to understand that trypanophobia is a learned response. We are not born with an inherent fear of injections. Your subconscious mind has, at some point, created an association between injections and danger. This often stems from a childhood experience — a painful injection, a frightened reaction from a parent, or a medical procedure that felt overwhelming. In some cases, the phobia develops without a clear triggering event.
One distinctive feature of injection phobia is the vasovagal response — a tendency to faint. This happens because the body's fight-or-flight response first raises blood pressure and heart rate, and then, in some people, the body overcompensates by dropping blood pressure dramatically. This physical response is not under conscious control, which is why it cannot be overcome through willpower alone. Hypnotherapy addresses the underlying subconscious pattern that triggers this chain of events.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Fear of Injections
With over 30 years of clinical experience, I have helped many clients overcome their fear of injections using a gentle, comprehensive approach. I combine hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to address the phobia at its source.
I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be shown needles or asked to confront your fear in any way that causes distress. All the work takes place in the calm, safe environment of my practice in Wilmslow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely not. There are no needles, syringes, or medical equipment in my practice. All therapeutic work is done through hypnotherapy, EFT, and NLP in a completely comfortable, non-clinical environment.
Yes. Get in touch as soon as possible and I will do my best to see you before your appointment. Even a single session can make a significant difference to your ability to manage the experience. Many clients are surprised by how quickly the fear can be reduced.
Yes. The vasovagal fainting response is triggered by the same subconscious fear pattern. By addressing the underlying fear through hypnotherapy, we also address the physical chain of events that leads to fainting. Many clients find that the fainting response resolves along with the anxiety.
Most clients see significant improvement within one to three sessions. Injection phobia typically responds well to this approach because it is usually a focused, specific fear rather than a complex, multi-layered condition.
There is significant overlap. Trypanophobia specifically refers to injections, while belonephobia refers to needles more broadly. In practice, many people experience both. My treatment can address the fear of injections, needles, or both, depending on your specific situation.
