Hypnotherapy for Fear of Bees and Wasps in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Apiphobia
When the warmer months arrive, do you find yourself unable to enjoy being outdoors? Does the distant buzzing of a bee or wasp send you into a spiral of panic? Perhaps you avoid gardens, parks and outdoor dining entirely, or you find yourself scanning every room for the sight or sound of a winged insect. If this sounds familiar, your fear is real, it is valid, and it does not have to rule your life.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Apiphobia?
Apiphobia is the clinical term for an intense, irrational fear of bees, while spheksophobia refers specifically to wasps. In practice, many people experience a combined fear of both. While a degree of caution around stinging insects is perfectly sensible, a phobia goes far beyond healthy caution — it involves a disproportionate fear response that can dominate your thoughts and behaviour.

As I often explain to my clients: we are not born with an inherent fear of bees — far from it; we are born with a curiosity of all around us. The fear develops later, through our experiences and observations. Perhaps you were stung as a child and the pain and shock created a lasting association. Perhaps you watched a parent or sibling react with extreme fear, and your young mind learned that bees and wasps were dangerous. Perhaps a classmate's dramatic reaction in the playground became imprinted on your subconscious.
These are all examples of learned responses, and the good news is that what has been learned can be unlearned. The fear was not always there, which means it does not have to remain.
For many people, the phobia is sustained not by the insects themselves but by the fear of the fear — the anticipatory dread of encountering a bee or wasp and the panic that would follow. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle that can worsen over time if left untreated.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Bees and Wasps
If you have been living with this phobia, you may have been told to "just ignore them" or "stay still and they will go away." While well-intentioned, this advice does nothing to address the root of your fear. You may also be relieved to hear that we do not use exposure therapy. You will not be asked to sit in a room with bees or look at pictures of wasps. The approach is gentle, comfortable and entirely within your control.
Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind — the part of you that stores your fear response. During a session, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where your subconscious becomes receptive to positive change. In this calm, focused state, it becomes possible to reprogram the way your mind responds to bees and wasps, allowing you to stay calm and relaxed and feel in control in situations that in the past caused you anxiety and panic.
- Understand the root causes of your fear of bees and wasps
- Retrain your subconscious responses
- Learn EFT tapping and self-hypnosis for daily use
- Build lasting confidence and resilience

Frequently Asked Questions
We are not born afraid of bees. The fear is a learned response, typically developed through a painful sting experience, observing a parent or other significant person reacting fearfully, or absorbing frightening information during childhood. Sometimes the original trigger has been forgotten, but the fear response remains active in the subconscious.
No. I do not use exposure therapy. The treatment works entirely through relaxation, positive suggestion and emotional release techniques. You will feel comfortable and safe throughout.
Most phobia clients experience significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will discuss the likely number of sessions with you during your initial consultation, based on your individual circumstances.
Absolutely. Most people who fear bees also fear wasps, and the treatment approach is the same. I will tailor the sessions to address whichever stinging insects trigger your fear response.
A previous sting is one of the most common triggers for this phobia. While the pain of a sting is real, a phobia develops when the fear response becomes disproportionate to the actual risk. Hypnotherapy can help your subconscious mind to process that experience and respond more calmly in future.
