Hypnotherapy for Fear of Caterpillars in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Lepidopterophobia
If the sight of a caterpillar — or even the thought of one — fills you with genuine terror, I want you to know something important: I understand exactly how you feel. Not just as a therapist, but as someone who lived with this very phobia for years. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating. It caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. It affected my ability to enjoy the outdoors, to garden, to walk through the countryside — all the things that most people take for granted.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is a Fear of Caterpillars?
A fear of caterpillars does not have a widely used clinical name, though it falls within the broader category of entomophobia (fear of insects). It is an intense, irrational fear response to caterpillars that goes far beyond a simple dislike or mild discomfort. For those who experience it, the reaction can be as powerful and distressing as any other phobia.

Like all phobias, a fear of caterpillars is a learned response. We are not born afraid of caterpillars — we are born with a curiosity of all around us. As young children, we are fascinated by crawling, wriggling things. The fear develops later, through experience or observation. Perhaps a caterpillar crawled on you unexpectedly and the sensation was deeply unpleasant. Perhaps you saw a parent or sibling react with visible disgust or fear. Perhaps a group of caterpillars in a nest triggered a visceral response that your subconscious mind locked in as a permanent warning.
I know from my own experience how all-encompassing this phobia can become. It was not just about the caterpillars themselves — it was the fear of the fear. The dread of walking outside during caterpillar season. The anxiety about what might be lurking on a leaf or dangling from a branch. The nightmares that brought the fear into my sleep. The whole experience was controlled by a response that my conscious mind knew was irrational, but that my subconscious mind insisted was absolutely necessary for my survival.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Your Fear of Caterpillars
When I set about overcoming my own caterpillar phobia, I turned to the techniques I trusted most — EFT and hypnosis. These are the same techniques I now combine with NLP to help my clients at my Wilmslow practice. And I can tell you from personal experience that they work.
One thing that is very important to me is that we do not use exposure therapy. I would never have subjected myself to being placed in a room with caterpillars, and I would never ask a client to do so either. The approach is gentle, comfortable and works with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to face your fear head-on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. My fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. Through EFT and hypnosis, I was able to resolve it completely. This personal experience is one of the reasons I am so passionate about helping others with their phobias.
Absolutely not. I do not use exposure therapy. The treatment works through deep relaxation, positive suggestion and emotional release techniques. You will feel comfortable and safe throughout.
Phobias often respond to treatment very quickly. Many clients find significant improvement within one to three sessions. I will give you an honest assessment during your initial consultation.
That is very common. Many people cannot pinpoint a specific event that started their phobia. The techniques I use — particularly EFT and hypnotherapy — can work directly with the emotional response even when the original cause has been forgotten.
Yes. While caterpillars are my area of particular personal understanding, the techniques I use are effective for all insect-related phobias. The principles are the same — we are working with the subconscious mind to change a learned fear response.
