Hypnotherapy for Fear of Moths in Wilmslow
Clinical name: Mottephobia
A fear of moths can make the simplest things feel impossible. Turning on a lamp in the evening, opening a window on a warm night, sitting outside as the light fades — all of these ordinary moments can become charged with anxiety when you know that moths could appear at any moment. The unpredictable, fluttering flight pattern that sends them careening towards light sources and, seemingly, straight towards you can trigger a level of panic that feels completely overwhelming.
What clients say
“I had a terrible fear of flying and after just two sessions with Karen I was able to fly abroad on holiday feeling calm and relaxed. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone…”

What Is Mottephobia?
Mottephobia is the term used to describe an intense, irrational fear of moths. It falls within the category of specific animal phobias, which are among the most common types of phobia. While moths are harmless to humans, the fear they provoke in someone with mottephobia is genuine, powerful, and often debilitating.

Several features of moths tend to trigger the strongest reactions. Their erratic, unpredictable flight is a major factor — unlike butterflies, which tend to fly in more graceful patterns, moths dart and flutter in seemingly random directions, making it impossible to predict where they will go next. Their tendency to fly towards light sources means they appear precisely when and where you least expect them, often heading straight for you when you are near a lamp or screen.
For some people, it is the physical appearance of moths — the dusty wings, the furry bodies, the way they fold their wings flat when at rest — that provokes the most intense response. Others are most disturbed by the idea of a moth landing on them or becoming tangled in their hair.
It is important to understand that this fear is a learned response. We are not born with an inherent fear of moths. Your subconscious mind created this association between moths and danger at some point in your life. Perhaps a moth flew into your face as a child, or you witnessed someone else reacting with fear or disgust. In many cases, the origin is unclear — the subconscious can form these associations in ways that bypass conscious awareness entirely.
The crucial point is that because this response was learned, it can be unlearned. Your mind created the fear pattern, and through hypnotherapy, we can help it create a new, calm pattern in its place.
Why Choose Karen Ashley?
I know exactly what it feels like to live with a phobia that others might not understand. My own fear of caterpillars was very debilitating — it caused panic attacks, fainting, hyperventilation, crying and recurring nightmares. I overcame it using EFT and hypnosis, the same techniques I now use with my clients. That personal experience means I truly understand what you are going through, and I know that freedom from your fear is absolutely possible.
My approach is gentle, with no exposure therapy whatsoever. I combine Hypnotherapy, EFT and NLP to work with your subconscious mind rather than forcing you to confront your fear. This means you stay comfortable and in control throughout, while we address the root cause of your phobia at the level where it actually lives.
I have been treating phobias since 1994 — over 30 years of clinical experience. My qualifications include BA Hons, Dip CAH, MasterNLP, PEFT and CI, and I am a Certified Trainer in both Hypnotherapy and EFT. I am registered with the NCH, NGH and GHR.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Fear of Moths
With over 30 years of experience treating phobias, I use a gentle, integrated approach that combines hypnotherapy with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This combination is particularly effective for creature phobias like mottephobia because it addresses the fear at every level — emotional, physical, and cognitive.
I want to be absolutely clear that I do not use exposure therapy. You will not be shown moths, asked to be near moths, or placed in any situation that causes you distress. My approach is entirely gentle and takes place in the safe, comfortable environment of my practice in Wilmslow.

No. I do not use exposure therapy in any form. All of the work is done through hypnotherapy, EFT, and NLP in a comfortable, moth-free environment. You will not be confronted with moths at any point.
A phobia goes far beyond dislike. It involves an intense, disproportionate fear response that interferes with your daily life — keeping windows closed, avoiding certain spaces, experiencing panic attacks. If your reaction to moths is significantly affecting your quality of life, it is a phobia, and it can be treated.
Most clients respond well within one to three sessions. Creature phobias tend to be one of the most responsive conditions to hypnotherapy. We will discuss your progress together and you will never be pressured into booking more sessions than you need.
Absolutely. Many clients cannot identify a specific triggering event, and that does not affect the success of treatment. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind, which can process and resolve the fear regardless of whether the conscious mind remembers its origin.
Please do not let that stop you. Phobias are learned responses, not character flaws. I have treated every kind of phobia over the past 30 years, and I greet every one with the same understanding and compassion. Your fear is valid, and it deserves proper treatment.
